AP Sketchbooks

Expectations: A minimum of 2 pages must be used for each assignment. The 1st page should be for journaling, making notes, practicing colors, trying new mediums, experimentation, research, reference pictures, etc. The 2nd page should be a “wall worthy” finished piece. Sometimes you may find that combining page 1 and 2 across the binding creates the best composition. The sketchbook journal is homework and due at the beginning of class on the assigned date or it is late. Label the work each week with the topic and date so it can be graded. You will choose what you are drawing from the list of topics. You may create your own topic if you clear it with me BEFORE you work on it.

DESIGN is deliberate so you should plan the composition DESIGN is deliberate so you should plan the composition. Always consider how to use the elements and especially the principles of design. Consider prepping the page(s) before you work on them. Sometimes covering the white page with a watercolor wash or a newspaper and tissue collage lead to greater creativity. Your sketchbook should be used for more than class assignments. When it becomes a habit for you to use then you will see your Art rise to the next level.

Working from reference images to develop techniques

Sometimes prepping a page with a watercolor wash can create a great background and inspiration.

Artist Jonathan Yeo ‘s technique is studied on the left side and a reference picture is attached to the right side to apply the technique.

This idea journaling page turned into a final “wall worthy” piece.

Reference photo with watercolor paint swatches and hand written notes to develop the image.
