2. What will I use my sketchbook for during this semester?
Journaling/Writing assignments
Self-critique and reflection
Choice drawing (freedrawing) assignments
Sketching out ideas/brainstorming

3. Journaling/ Self Reflection
After completing a drawing exercise or project, you will take some time to reflect about your work by journaling in your sketchbook.
This helps identify areas you feel you are successful in and what you can work on as an artist.

4. Choice Drawings/Freedrawings
You will receive grades for completing freedrawings on your own time. These are unstructured assignments to explore your personal interests and new techniques.

13. Brainstorming ideas
To come up with ideas, concepts, compositional layouts, etc. for your larger drawings, use your sketchbook for “rough draft” or thumbnail sketches.
Make lists of ideas for projects.

18. Personalize it! This sketchbook is YOURS, so make it unique to YOU.
What subject matter do you like?
Do you have inspirational quotes or pictures pasted inside?
Do you right down ideas for drawings when you get them?

20. First Sketchbook Assignment: Combination Writing and Drawing
“Self-Portrait through Drawing and Writing”
The term self-portrait is open to interpretation, as long as you present it with both drawing and writing of, about, or concerning yourself.

21. Grading Criteria This should be 2 pages, as shown in example.
Roughly ½ writing, ½ drawing
Should include an image of yourself – it is a ‘self-portrait’ assignment
Write using advice included on handout
Be Creative and do your best!
