British Colonial Rule What factors contributed to, or worked against, responsible government in Canada? To REALLY understand the rebellions that would eventually lead to responsible government... We need to know what was up with everyone.

British Colonial Rule What was life like for a person living in British North America in regards to social, political and economic factors?

Great Migration The 1815 - 1850 Britain Canada

Great Migration The - Following the War of 1812, the Canadian Colonies were ready to: Develop their natural resources Settle more land for agricultural purposes - “PULL” Factors Poster from 1869 enticing people to move to Ontario

Great Migration The - From 1815 to 1850 the colonies experienced a RAPID growth in population - Most of these immigrants would come from Britain Over 960,000 between 1815 and 1850 To put it in perspective, only 25,000 people had immigrated to British North America in the 31 years before this (1784-1815)

Britain What's up in ?? - The War of 1812 was done - The French/British war was done - But prosperity was not easily attained French/British war, known as the Napoleonic war ended in 1815

What's up in Britain - The ocean ways opened up - War veterans were now unemployed - War supply & provision jobs were cut back = high unemployment rates - Higher life expectancy - “PUSH” Factors

What's up in Britain - The “magic” potato - Not enough jobs or land - Scottish “clearances” forced out thousands of people Introduced to Britain in the 18th century, advantages over the staple crop of grain, took only 3-4 months to grow, could be cultivated by hand, did not need rich soil and had high nutritional value = HIGH POPULATION, not enough room

A Poor Man's Country... - Land for agriculture was plentiful & cheap - Many immigrants still had to find seasonal work until they could purchase land - Families relied on handouts from the army

The Irish Potato Famine - In the 1840’s, famine hit Ireland, affecting the potato crop - 90,000 Irish left for British North America in 1847 - Many suffered from sickness like cholera & typhus - 1/5 of all Irish that left died before their 1st winter

The Voyage Out The cabin is neatly fitted up, and I enjoy the luxury of a handsome sofa, with crimson draperies, in the great cabin. The state cabin is also ours… Though we have been little more than a week on board, I am getting weary of the voyage. I can only compare the monotony of it to being weather-bound in some country inn…
