Climate-KIC started in 2010… Option Climate-KIC started in 2010… Climate-KIC is the EU’s main climate innovation initiative Vision: to enable Europe to lead the global transformation towards sustainability We drive innovation in climate change through creative partnerships large and small, local and global, between the private, public and academic sectors Mission: We bring together, inspire, and empower a dynamic community to build a zero carbon economy and climate resilient society Climate-KIC is the EU’s largest public private partnership addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation Climate-KIC is one of the first three Knowledge & Innovation Communities (KICs) Created in 2010 by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) The EIT is an EU body whose mission is to create sustainable growth Climate-KIC supports the EIT bringing innovation to market quickly by working with partners from across Europe – something they couldn’t do on their own

Where we are More than 200 partners RIS regions are included in the map: Ireland, Portugal, Romania, Estonia, Slovenia More than 200 partners

Who we are: in Europe 30 core partners

Who we are in Italy core partner

What we do We address climate change across four priority themes: Themes focus on four principles Involve experts and end users to focus on supply and demand led innovation Use independent experts to avoid conflicts of interest Revisit climate challenges regularly to adapt to rapid changes in the market Use data-driven approach to select climate challenges with largest impact Value Propositions Business sector: We offer access to climate change expertise and an international pool of young talent as well as opportunities for investment in new technology solutions. Education sector: We complement the existing education system and offer a creative approach to training graduates, professionals, entrepreneurs, innovators and leaders in climate change innovation Research sector: We over offer the ability to influence and provide direction for European Research and innovation program Horizon 2020 Innovation sector: We offer early exposure to cutting-edge technologies and opportunities to work with or invest in start-ups related to your core business.

Urban Transitions Urban Transitions is part of Climate-KIC, the EU’s largest public private partnership addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation: Urban Transitions develops integrated, scalable and replicable solutions that underpin the climate-resilient, carbon-negative cities of tomorrow. URBAN TRANSITIONS Building a new foundation for industry in Europe   As a global society we can no longer afford to take carbon out of the ground and release it into the atmosphere. (Big statement?) The transition to economically viable circular models of production is key to delivering the carbon-neutral European economy of tomorrow . Putting our continent’s industrial activity on a sustainable footing means creating carbon-neutral value chains based on the circular economy and the bio-economy. By focusing efforts away from singular gains towards a cross-industry approach we replace self-interest with a fruitful symbiosis.

While there have been major technological Urban Innovation Urban Transitions’ Strategy   While there have been major technological breakthroughs, the challenge is to demonstrate them in real-world settings, to scale them and ultimately to integrate them in a systemic way City authorities and increasingly corporate actors acknowledge that socio-technical systems and citizen behavior are at the core of fundamental and accepted transitions and thus need to be strongly incorporated in any innovation endeavor Bridge the lack of actors that can neutrally coordinate change in cities at systemic level Enable infrastructures and systems like information and communication technologies, data architecture, urban planning and governance to drive and replicate innovation effectively and to render our cities more responsive. While there have been major technological breakthroughs, the challenge is to: demonstrate them in real-world settings Incorporate City authorities and increasingly corporate actors in any innovation endeavor Enable infrastructures and systems to drive and replicate innovation effectively and to render our cities more responsive

Our business model An end-to-end approach that supports, rather than dictates progress: Our revised Innovation Framework adopts an integrated end-to-end approach that supports, rather than dictates progress. We have formalised five specific programmes each having a specific purpose linked to the progress of innovation. They are: Defining Priorities: Identify the most potential for climate action within our network. Ideator: Make connections that generate innovation opportunities Accelerator: Validate business models to accelerate the vision and guide investment Demonstrator: Implement the innovation and demonstrate its potential to deliver climate action Scaler: Scale innovation to realise climate action. Innovation is inherently unpredictable, both in deviating from original expectations and often non-linear manner in the way progress is experienced. However, we believe this pipeline approach, is the best way of leveraging our partner consortia, start-ups and other actors in our geographies, into a unique network that can create scale on a pan-European level. We will apply this to our thematic priorities – aiming at end-user needs and market development.
