1 Connecting to the Global Data Ecosystem
UN Innovation Lab Connecting to the Global Data Ecosystem Jenna Slotin Senior Director for Policy and Strategy January 2017 1

2 The Global Partnership has nearly 200 Data Champions

3 3 Core Goals Keeping data high on the political agenda and encouraging support for investments and innovations in data production and use. Supporting multi-stakeholder collaboration to align demand and supply at the country and sector level, bringing the collective skills and resources of our partners to bear on critical issues where better data can improve people’s lives, and encouraging collaboration across sectors and regions. Build trust by developing both norms and practical tools for collaboration and innovation that cut across sectoral, institutional and professional boundaries, creating a more robust data ecosystem for all.

4 Collaboration – How? Country engagement Online collaboration
Collaboratives

5 Data Roadmaps for Sustainable Development
Support countries at national and sub-national levels to develop and implement whole of government and multi-stakeholder data roadmaps for harnessing the data revolution for sustainable development, with particular emphasis on the SDGs and local priorities articulated in national plans.

6 What are Data Roadmaps in the context of the data revolution for sustainable development?
It’s an action plan or a process with short and long-term goals for addressing specific data needs and priorities in regards to SDG implementation. A data roadmap is ideally developed by governments at local, subnational or national levels according to local context and priorities: Multi-stakeholder involvement Situation assessment and understanding what’s going on; what other planning documents are in place? Priority Mapping Data/technology gaps assessment Requirements analysis Commitments to Action A data roadmap is part of an iterative and adaptive planning process.

7 Country Led Approaches
The Data Roadmaps for Sustainable Development approach is iterative, based on experiences and implementation models from partner countries Colombia Tanzania Philippines Senegal Sierra Leone USA Kenya SDG Goals and Targets National Plans and Priorities Localized Framework

8 Data for Action Official Data for Planning and Monitoring Geospatial Data Citizen Generated Data Privately Held Data Open Data More informed and data driven decision making The last point I want to make is that the data roadmaps focus on both data for monitoring and data for action, and aim to bring together different stakeholders and data sources to address both elements. Fill data gaps more efficiently, frequently and cost effectively Real-time, dynamic, disaggregated data Official and non-official data Use innovative approaches and range of stakeholder to solve problems

9 A Toolbox to Support Subnational and National Stakeholders
Multi-stakeholder Situation Assessment Priority Mapping Gaps Assessment Requirements Analysis Governance and Leadership Capacity and Resources Principles and Standards Technology, Innovation and Analysis Roadmap Development Process Operational Considerations Many processes are already in place. Tools and methods have been developed or are being developed. A data roadmap process acknowledges good practice, lessons learned, and tools applied from peers to inform its development. So how does a toolbox fit within the roadmap development process and the operational factors it needs to consider? A toolbox is meant to support subnational and national stakeholders by taking into account process already underway and tools that have already been developed and brings them together in one place. The Toolbox brings together these processes, tools and methods into separate modules that are contributed by different actors or groups of actors. Users can mix and match the modules drawing on the parts that are most useful for their needs.

10 Online Collaboration Empowering you to connect with partners, share resources and find solutions for your sustainable development data needs.

11 Partners 110+ partner pages included in the marketplace
Across all sectors Include key areas of expertise relevant to the SDGs Where work is being conducted Products and services Collaboration needs 11

13 Data Collaboratives A data collaborative is: Last year: Mapped data collaboratives to understand what’s out there, experience and common challenges This year: Focus on a few sectors or themes where a substantial number of partners have an interest and there is a clear rationale to engage and agreement among other stakeholders that the GPSDD can bring something new
