1 KIC model for boosting innovation in the region – inter-regional collaboration for research and innovation. | Brussels | Sebastian Pucułek – Business Development Lead

2 The climate challenge Urgent need for both mitigation and adaptation
Combined action of business, academia, citizens and government Huge global risk, but great opportunity for creation of a green economy Climate-KIC in key position There’s urgent need for both mitigation and adaptation: 2°C is the guard rail for ‘manageable’ climate change. 2015: 1°C warming already impacting economies. Already seeing higher frequency extreme weather: impact on crop yield, health and potential for social unrest. COP21 ‘pledges’ will only abate 50% of C02 emissions It’s a huge global risk, but also… a great opportunity for creation of a green economy

3 Business opportunity:
the biggest challenge facing mankind and our planet is also a unique opportunity There’s unique opportunity to address the biggest challenge facing mankind and our planet We estimated market for low carbon technology and products to over €5.5 trillion Climate-KIC can lead for Europe in: new technology and policy, new businesses, new jobs It will result in co-benefits for health, resource use, food and mobility

5 Without government, multinational cooperation, funds synergies and education we will not solve climate change problem. What we need is combined action of business, academia, citizens & government

6 HOW? So how to do it? And why Climate Change?

7 EIT is integral part of Horizon 2020 student to entrepreneur
European Institute of Innovation and Technology The EIT is an independent body of the European Union set up in 2008 to spur innovation and entrepreneurship across Europe to overcome some of its greatest challenges. It brings together leading higher education institutions, research labs and companies to form dynamic cross-border partnerships – Knowledge and Innovation Communities, KICs - that develop innovative products and services, start new companies, and train a new generation of entrepreneurs. The EIT aims to increase the co-operation and integration between higher education, business and research to facilitate the transition from: EIT is integral part of Horizon 2020 student to entrepreneur The EIT is an EU body that enhances Europe’s ability to innovate by nurturing young entrepreneurial talent and supporting new ideas through the Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs). idea to product lab to customer

8 Climate-KIC started in 2010
Climate-KIC is the EU’s largest public private partnership addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation: Created in 2010 by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Climate-KIC supports the EIT bringing innovation to market quickly by working with partners from across Europe – something they couldn’t do on their own The KICs carry out activities that cover the entire innovation chain: training and education programmes, reinforcing the journey from research to the market, innovation projects, as well as business incubators and accelerators. The EIT’s role is to guide the process and set the strategies, but it’s up to the KICs to put these into practice and provide results. The EIT has created a family of KICs to address societal challenges through a unique model of innovation KICs integrate all elements of the knowledge triangle – business, research and higher education – in order to boost innovation: - from idea to product - from lab to market - from student to entrepreneur

11 Where we operate We work across Europe, with offices in 18 European locations We work across Europe, with offices in 18 European locations

12 What we do We address climate change across four priority themes:
Themes focus on four principles Involve experts and end users to focus on supply and demand led innovation Use independent experts to avoid conflicts of interest Revisit climate challenges regularly to adapt to rapid changes in the market Use data-driven approach to select climate challenges with largest impact Value Propositions Business sector: We offer access to climate change expertise and an international pool of young talent as well as opportunities for investment in new technology solutions. Education sector: We complement the existing education system and offer a creative approach to training graduates, professionals, entrepreneurs, innovators and leaders in climate change innovation Research sector: We over offer the ability to influence and provide direction for European Research and innovation program Horizon 2020 Innovation sector: We offer early exposure to cutting-edge technologies and opportunities to work with or invest in start-ups related to your core business.

13 Our business model An end-to-end approach that supports, rather than dictates progress: Our revised Innovation Framework adopts an integrated end-to-end approach that supports, rather than dictates progress. We have formalised five specific programmes each having a specific purpose linked to the progress of innovation. They are: Defining Priorities: Identify the most potential for climate action within our network. Ideator: Make connections that generate innovation opportunities Accelerator: Validate business models to accelerate the vision and guide investment Demonstrator: Implement the innovation and demonstrate its potential to deliver climate action Scaler: Scale innovation to realise climate action. Innovation is inherently unpredictable, both in deviating from original expectations and often non-linear manner in the way progress is experienced. However, we believe this pipeline approach, is the best way of leveraging our partner consortia, start-ups and other actors in our geographies, into a unique network that can create scale on a pan-European level. We will apply this to our thematic priorities – aiming at end-user needs and market development.

17 Smart Sustainable Districts
Case Study Smart Sustainable Districts Catalysing sustainable development at local level Driving urban innovations with ‘factor four’ impacts In four ‘deep dive’ zones – Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Docks de Saint-Ouen, Green Moabit and Utrecht Centre West – a dialogue is helping districts tackle operational problems they couldn’t otherwise solve around climate impacts, sustainability and quality of life. Case Study Heading: Catalysing sustainable development at local level In four ‘deep dive’ zones – Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Docks de Saint-Ouen, Green Moabit and Utrecht Centre West – a dialogue is helping districts tackle operational problems they couldn’t otherwise solve around climate impacts, sustainability and quality of life. Smart Sustainable Districts takes as its starting point the idea that meaningful change: is most effective at the neighbourhood level has wider integration opportunities than at individual building scale with more autonomy than at city scale staged engagement process delivers demand-led solutions replicable within and beyond a network of participating cities Commercial platform We find integrated solutions, often in areas where no precedent exists. Our central vision is a commitment to ‘factor four’ impacts, or four-fold increases in resource productivity brought about by doubling wealth gains while halving resource use. We want Europe’s cities to say – let’s do this in all our districts.

18 Benefits of the synergies and participation in H2020
Great multinational cooperation platform Access to project financing not reachable at the national/regional level Chance for best practice exchange and Operational Excellence implementation specially in the field of research Access to knowledge, research data, science networks Access to top research equipment Chance for creating a critical mass and specialization in the selcted fields of R&D Creating synergies through the Framework Programmes as Horizon 2020, KIC’s funds and National funds dedicated to innovation, we can re-stimulate the entrepreneurship gene and innovation, starting from a completely different level. Acting in specialized clusters is crucial for Europe in terms of creating new jobs and economic growth. By changing the old paradigms, it is exactly what Europe needs today.
