Leading with EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE Jill Stratton Associate Dean of Students November 30, 2010 Presented by: Jill Stratton, Ph.D. jill.stratton@gmail.com

Audience Participation! What are 3 words you would use to describe an effective leader???

Emotional Intelligence Defined “ The capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships. -Daniel Goleman

EI Descriptors Character; personality; soft skills; socially capable; self-confident; good communicator. “IQ gets you the interview – EI gets you the job and ultimately the promotion.” Misconceptions EI does not merely mean “being nice”. Nor does it mean allowing free rein to your feelings – “letting it all hang out.”

Emotions influence: The Functions of Emotions Attention, memory, and learning Decision-making and judgment Relationship quality Physical and mental health

How is EI Measured? Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) Emotional Competency Inventory (Goleman) Trait Emotional Intelligence Model (Schutte)

(Peter Salovey and John Mayer) Five Domains of EI-Goleman (Peter Salovey and John Mayer) Self Awareness (recognizing a feeling as it happens—knowing your emotions) Managing Your Emotions (ability to self-soothe) Motivating Yourself (marshalling emotions in service of a goal) Recognizing Emotions in Others (empathy) Interpersonal Relationships (“social arts”, managing other’s emotions)

As a leader, I am at my best when… Self-Awareness: STRATEGY As a leader, I am at my best when…

Learned Optimism What do you see?

Pessimism vs. Optimism Pessimists We all will face setbacks and failures, BUT here is the difference between pessimists and optimists: Pessimists Expect bad things to go on for ever (permanent), were caused by them (personal) and will affect their whole life (pervasive).

Optimism Optimists Recover more quickly from setbacks Are able to act again sooner due to the way they explain the failure to themselves When something bad happens to an optimist, they expect that the bad thing will be short lived (temporary), was caused by someone else (external) and only affects a partial area of their life (specific).

Gender Differences in EI?

Gender Differences in EI? Women tend to be more aware of their emotions, show more empathy and are adept interpersonally. Men tend to be more self-confident and optimistic, adapt more easily, and handle stress better. However, on the whole, men and women are generally equal in total emotional intelligence.

Importance of EI Why is Emotional Intelligence important and how is it relevant to you as leaders ?

Areas that EI can impact leadership success: EI and Impact on Success Areas that EI can impact leadership success: Collaboration: group projects, team work, interaction with colleagues, innovation, time management Utilizing and leveraging your strengths Relationships/friendships Community Partnerships Professional Growth Opportunities Career Advancement

How does EI impact success? EI and Impact on Success How does EI impact success? A compilation of studies called "The Business Case for Emotional Intelligence," by Rutgers University researcher Cary Cherniss found repeated evidence that possession of such emotional competencies as cooperation, accurate self-assessment, optimism, and ability to handle stress led to greater productivity, job satisfaction or worker retention. -George Lucas, Educational Foundation People who possess high emotional intelligence are the people who truly succeed in work as well as play, building flourishing careers and lasting, meaningful relationships. --Daniel Goleman

EI and Impact on Success GOOD NEWS! Emotional intelligence can be learned and is enhanced with experiences – maturing!!

EI Key Skills & Behaviors for Leaders and Followers: EI and Impact on Success EI Key Skills & Behaviors for Leaders and Followers: Achieve balance-cognitive & emotional systems Learn & model critical, constructive & reflective thinking Develop self confidence and self efficacy Develop active listening skills Identify & use primary learning style-expand learning style Use resources to build upon and enhance professional growth and career excellence

EI and Impact on Success People with highly-developed EI are aware of their IMPACT. They are acutely aware that the impact that behavior has on others can be different from what you intend or expect. People respond to you based upon what they perceive about your behavior, not what you think they perceive.

Strategies for Increasing EI Take time for self-reflection Seek out a trusted friend or mentor and ask them to provide you honest feedback on your interpersonal skills Listen Pay attention Notice your feelings Develop healthy coping mechanisms for dealing with “hot button” issues Use “I” statements (especially during conflicts) Participate in a mock interview Slow down and pay attention Observe non-verbal cues Own mistakes, apologize, and move forward Practice empathy (Walk in someone else’s shoes) Be aware of your environment and demonstrate respect Express gratitude Take care of yourself physically and emotionally

EI and Impact on Success How will you develop and increase your EI? What is one thing that you will you do today? What is one thing that you will you do this week? What is one thing you will you do this month?

Thank you! Let’s Continue the Connection! Jill Stratton www.jillstratton.com jill.stratton@gmail.com
