This chat box is available on all the web pages of the Bronfman Business Library Hours: Mon-Thurs: 9 a.m. – 10 p.m. Friday: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday: 12 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Using the Library’s Catalogue Use it to find books (print and electronic), gov. publications, videos and more… Do not use it to find articles on a topic Use it to find a journal or magazine, e.g. Harvard Business Review. Use Periodical Title Search option Use it to find a database, e.g. Proquest Business, Books 24 x 7

Using the Library’s Catalogue Refine your search via the Refine menus to the left Sort your search results (the default is to sort by Relevance)

Using the Library’s Catalogue This catalogue entry can be texted, e-mailed, added to “My List”, or exported to RefWorks. Login is required. Similar items in the libraries, which may also be helpful for your research This is what the results look like. If the item is checked out, you can place a hold, or request Intercampus Borrowing Click on the subjects to search for all the items with the same subject The item’s availability in the libraries

Resources Not Available at York University Libraries? Direct Borrowing Privileges i.e. borrowing in person at another Canadian university libraries. Note a fee applies for University of Toronto. Interlibrary loan services via RACER Register with RACER so you have an account Requests submitted online No charge for books, and up to 50 journal articles free per year for graduate students 12

Different Types of Journals: Scholarly, Trade, Popular, News

Finding journal articles: Finding journals in the library catalogue If you have a specific reference to a journal article, you can use the library catalogue to see if it’s available electronically. Here’s an example of a citation: Firoz, C. A. M., & Ansari, A. A. (2010). Environmental accounting and international financial reporting standards (IFRS). International Journal of Business and Management, 5(10), 105-105-112. Need to find this. What would you do. Google Scholar? Why use library and not Google? Explain that another case where the catalogue is key is when you have a citation or a reference to an article and prof asks you to find it. It is on a reading list. If you Google it chances are you might not find it because it’s from a journal or magazine that charges money. So use the library site so you avail of the resources it pays for to support teaching and research at York. Explain need to search using title of journal. Explain they need to search Periodical Title. Go live and do this. The image is linked to the library home page. It’s on page two. Type the title of the journal into the catalogue’s search box (not the article’s title!) Select Periodical Title from the dropdown menu. Hit go.

Short Video - Refresher Looking for an article citation May forget this down the line.

Finding Articles on a Topic Start Here -- > http://www. library Proquest Business Business Source Premier Factiva

Finding Journal Articles: Effective Search Strategies in an Articles Database Avoid natural language – typing full sentences into an articles database won’t work! Boil your topic down to keywords and concepts Connect you different concepts/ keywords with “and”: “and” is used for combining distinctive concepts and has the effect of narrowing the search fraud and accounting; risk management and controls Introduce synonyms to a keyword and divide the synonyms with “or” and put phrases in quotes “or” is used to combine synonyms or like terms and broadens the search accounting or financial reporting Use truncation symbols where appropriate to find relevant variants on a word manag*, canad*

Finding Journal Articles: Using Article Databases for your Research Demonstration Search Proquest Business Go to web guide for today’s session: http://www.library.yorku.ca/ccm/BG/assignments/mfac.en 2. Choose Proquest Business
