2 By the end of this workshop, you will be able to: create a RefWorks account import references into your RefWorks account by direct import feature organize your citations in folders search references create bibliography in different citation formats such as APA, MLA, etc. 2

3 Academic Writings and Citation Styles In academic writing, whenever we use someone else’s works, ideas, theory, quotes, methods, data, etc. we must cite the original source Citation styles are the rules that govern on how we format these citations There are many different citation styles set up by different academic bodies or publishers. The most commonly used ones include the APA style, MLA style and the Chicago style 3

5 What is RefWorks? In short, RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic management software that helps you organize your citations and prepare your reference/bibliography lists:  Create a personal database online  Import citations automatically from Library catalogues, online databases or web pages you find on the Internet  Organize and manage references  Generate in-text citations, bibliography/reference lists in the citation style of your choice, including APA, MLA, Harvard, Chicago style and more 5 Use it anytime, anywhere, any devices where there is internet access.

6 First Time User: Create Your RefWorks Account 1. Library Home Page  Databases  RefWorks Icon (http://proxy1.library.ln.edu.hk:2048/login?url=h ttps://www.refworks.com/refworks2/?r=authen tication::init&groupcode=RWLingnanUL)RefWorks Iconhttp://proxy1.library.ln.edu.hk:2048/login?url=h ttps://www.refworks.com/refworks2/?r=authen tication::init&groupcode=RWLingnanUL 2. Click Signup for an Individual Account on the Left Panel 3. Fill in required information – Must use Lingnan Email Address 6

8 Adding References to RefWorks by Direct Import Direct Export from :  Library Catalogue  1-Search  Online Databases. E.g. LexisNexis Academic, EBSCOhost, ProQuest, and more … 8

9 Direct Export -- Library Catalogue 9 Use the Export to RefWorks button at the full display of a library record:

10 Last Imported Folder The imported data will be first placed in the last imported folder This folder only contains the latest imported records All previously imported records are stored in the databases but not associated with any folders 10

11 Direct Export – 1-Search Perform a search in 1-Search At the Search Results, select which citations to export by clicking the save this item icon After you have chosen all the items you want to export, click the Saved Items (x) link at the button of screen A new box will open, click RefWorks If you have already logged into RefWorks, the selected 1-Search records will be imported to RefWorks immediately; if you haven’t logged in, you will be asked to login first Then click View Last Imported Folder and select Global Edit If you are using online full text, then change the “Source Type” to electronic (follow the last steps in the LexisNexis session above); if you need to get the full text from print copy, there is no need to change the “Source Type” 11

12 Hands-on Exercise Perform a search on Hong Kong and political reform in 1-Search Form the search results, select 3 – 4 records Import the records to your RefWorks account 12

14 Direct Export -- LexisNexis (1) At the result list or article display screen in LexisNexis Academic, look for the icon for Direct Export to RefWorks 14

15 Direct Export -- LexisNexis (2) 15 If you have already logged in to RefWorks, the results from LexisNexis Academic will be immediately transferred to RefWorks, otherwise, you will be asked to log in. After import is completed, click the Edit Imported References. Enter LexisNexis Academic as Database, type http://www.lexisnexis.com/ in Links field; then click Save Changes.http://www.lexisnexis.com/ Click OK to confirm adding data to Electronic Source Related Fields in reference(s).

16 Direct Export -- LexisNexis (3) (Global Edit) 16 Now click View Last Imported Folder and select Global Edit icon. Global Edit

17 Direct Export -- LexisNexis (4) (Global Edit) Select Source Type under Field to Add Data. Then choose All in List, set Source Type as Electronic and click Add Data. 17

18 18 Direct Export -- LexisNexis (5) (Global Edit) Click OK to confirm adding data to Source Type in reference(s) A “Completed” message box will be displayed on the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Finally, you can click the “X” icon to close the Global Edit. Type "EDIT ALL" in the box and then click Edit References to confirm that you wish to edit all references.

20 Search References As the number of references in your RefWorks account grows, you need know the ways to find specific references.  Quick Search Box  Advance Search  Lookup by Author /Descriptor /Periodical 20

21 Organize References in Folders Folders provide a good way of organizing your citations by project, topic, etc. Citations can be placed in one or more folders 21

23 Create a Folder (2) 23 You can create a number of different folders to organize your references

24 Create a Folder (3) 24 A folder name will be shown to notate which folder each reference is located in.

25 Hand-on Exercise Create a folder titled “Education in China” Under Education in China folder, create a sub folder titled “Education Reform” Add some references to the Education Reform Rename the Education Reform to China Education Reform 25

27 Create a Bibliography (1) 1. Click the Create Bibliography icon 2. Select desired style from the Output Style drop- down menu 3. Under the Format a Bibliography from a List of References, select desired format from the File Type drop-down menu 4. Click the radio button of Specify Folder (optional) and select the desired folder from the drop-down menu 5. Click Create Bibliography 27
