NORTH - ADVANTAGES Population - 22 million to draw soldiers and workers Vast network of roads, canals, and 22,000 miles of railroad tracks - move soldiers and supplies through the North More money - developed economy, banking system and currency More factories - produce more weapons and supplies Already have a Navy

NORTH - DISADVANTAGES Fighting on unfamiliar territory Lacking military experience - school teachers, farmers, and laborers had to learn the basics of combat

SOUTH - ADVANTAGES Strong military tradition - many brilliant officers Southern farmers provided food for the troops Only needed to defend itself while the North got tired of fighting - “War of Attrition” Fighting for their way of life

SOUTH - DISADVANTAGES Population only 9 million - 4 million of those were slaves (5.5 million) Less developed banking system and less money - had to start printing Confederate money & some states printed their own currency Only 9,000 miles of RR tracks
