2 Facts 1. When the war began, both sides had advantages and disadvantages. How they would use those strengths and weaknesses would determine the war’s outcome. 2. The North liked the odds of the war , Such as. Larger population of free men. more industry better banking system

3 Continued. 3. The North also faced many disadvantages .
Bringing the southern states back to the union. Invading and holding the southern --- a large area filled with a hostile population. 4. The individual states refused to give the confederate government sufficient power.

It had a smaller population of free men to draw upon the army. 6.The Confederate government had difficulty delivering food, weapons, and other supplies to the troops. 7.The individual states refused to give the confederate government sufficient power.

6 War aims and strategies
The North and South entered the civil war with different aims. 2. The main goal of the north at the outset was to bring the southern states back into the union , ending slavery was not a major northern goal at first , but changed as the war continued.

7 Continued. 3. The Union ‘s plan to win the war had 3 main strategies.
blockade southern ports gain control of the Mississippi River capture Richmond, Virginia the Confederate capital. 4. For the South, the primary aim of the war was to win recognition as a independent nation.

8 Continued. 5. To achieve this goal, the South worked out a defensive strategy. It planned to defend it’s homeland, holding on to as mush of their territory as possible until the north was tired of fighting.
