1 American History Challenge This general was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He was one of the most, if not most, talented generals on either side. 5 The War Begins- Fort Sumter, S.C. April 12, 1861 Events at Fort Sumter, South Carolina Lincoln became president. The South took over federal forts. Federal troops refused to surrender. Confederate guns opened fire on Fort Sumter April 12, 1861. The Civil War begins.

8 Assignment You are a newspaper reporter covering the attack on Fort Sumter. Write a newspaper article about the start of the war. Remember to answer the 5 Ws (see page 478-479 for more details or research on your own) OR You are one of Lincoln’s advisors. Create a plan for President Lincoln to convince the border states to stay with the Union. (see page 480 for more details)
