After looking at the advantages and disadvantages of the North and the South answer these question:
Based on the evidence that you see which side, North or South, seemed to have a bigger advantage in winning the war? Why/how?
Why do you think the war will last for 4 years and not be finished more quickly?

7. Northern Advantages (Union)
a larger population to support the war effort 
more industry 
more abundant resources than the South 

8. Northern Disadvantages
Bringing the Southern states back into the Union would be a difficult task. 
The North would have to invade and hold the South–a large area filled with a hostile population. 
Public opinion in the North was divided over the war, and support for the war remained shaky until very near the end.

9. Southern Advantages (Confederacy)
Had support of white population 
fighting in familiar territory–defending their land, their homes, and their way of life 
superior military leadership, at least at first 
Strong tradition of military training 
Large number of officers

10. Southern Disadvantages
a smaller population of free men to draw upon in building an army 
very few factories to manufacture weapons and other supplies 
only one-half the food production of the North 
a limited transportation network 
the belief in states’ rights–a founding principle of the Confederacy – so they refused to give Confederate government the power to oversee the war
