Magnetic Forces Non-Contact Force

What are we going to learn today? Characteristics of magnets. Magnets can repel and attract each other How magnets behave What happens when you put two magnets together

What do all these new words actually mean? Magnet A stone or a piece of metal that attracts some other metal. Iron, Nickel, Cobalt are metals that are magnetic Attract To pull towards each other. Repel To push away from each other. Poles The ends of a magnet.

What are the characteristics of magnets? They can attract (pull) other materials. They can also repel (push) from other magnets. They are usually made of iron, cobalt, or nickel. Steel (paper clips) are also magnetic. They have two ends called magnetic poles.

What do the poles do? When a magnet is held from a string: The north pole points north The south pole points… can you guess? How do we know this? We can measure it with a compass! On school magnets, the RED pole is the north pole and the BLUE pole is the south.

But what happens if you put two magnets together? Talk to your partner- what do you think? So let’s try it. First of all, north to south… south to north… north to north… south to south…

All magnets have two poles

Two magnets with unlike poles facing will attract (pull towards) each other.

Two magnets with like poles facing will repel (push away) each other.

The pull of a magnet can be measured with a Newton (N) meter.

RECAP: “like” poles _______each other… “opposite” poles ________ each other. They do this because there is a FORCE between them.

Magnetic Field of our Earth:

Magnetic Field on Earth Earth is surrounded by huge magnetic NO scientific explanation Iron, Nickel, liquid inside the core of Earth Forces causes objects to line up with Earth’s magnetic field

MAGNETS AND MEGASTRUCTURES: Can you think of any megastructures that use magnetic forces?
