1 LO: To know the responses of different materials to magnets
Magnetism

2 What are some uses for magnets?
LO: To know the responses of different materials to magnets Magnets are in most electronic devices, in fact, anything that has a motor uses a magnet. They are used to slow down roller coasters and subways. Magnets are used to keep refrigerator doors closed. Magnets are even placed in the stomachs of cows to catch metals! Televisions, computers, and microwave ovens all operate with magnets. More uses of magnets are found every day!

3 What are the characteristics of magnets?
LO: To know the responses of different materials to magnets They have two ends called magnetic poles. They can also repel other magnets. They are usually made of iron. They can attract some materials.

4 What do all these new words actually mean?
LO: To know the responses of different materials to magnets What do all these new words actually mean? Magnet A stone or a piece of metal that attracts some other metal. Attract To pull towards each other. Repel To push away from each other. Poles The ends of a magnet.

5 LO: To know the responses of different materials to magnets
poles Every magnet has at least one north pole and one south pole.  The blue end of a magnet is usually the south pole. The red end of a magnet is usually the north pole.

6 LO: To know the responses of different materials to magnets
When two magnets are close, they create pushing or pulling forces on one another. These forces are strongest at the ends of the magnets. The two ends of a magnet are known as the north pole and the south pole.

7 LO: To know the responses of different materials to magnets
What did we find out? So now we know that “like” poles repel each other… and that “opposite” poles attract each other. They do this because there is a FORCE between them.

8 LO: To know the responses of different materials to magnets
Same poles repel LO: To know the responses of different materials to magnets If you try to put two magnets together with the same poles pointing towards one another, the magnets will push away from each other. We say they repel each other. In this picture two north poles are pushing away from each other (repelling each other).

9 Different poles attract
LO: To know the responses of different materials to magnets If you put two magnets together with different poles pointing towards one another, the magnets will pull towards each other. We say they attract each other. In this picture a north and a south pole are pulling towards each other (attracting each other).

10 LO: To know what is the difference between solubility and insolubility
Soluble LO: To know what is the difference between solubility and insolubility When a substance dissolves into another substance

11 LO: To know what is the difference between solubility and insolubility
Insoluble LO: To know what is the difference between solubility and insolubility When a substance cannot dissolve into another substance

12 LO: To know what the difference between irreversible and reversible
A Reversible Change When a substance has changed state (eg. a solid piece of chocolate to melted liquid chocolate) It can be changed back after (reversed).

13 LO: To know what the difference between irreversible and reversible
Solution When two substances are mixed they create a new substance. For example you can have a salt solution.

14 Reversible or Irreversible
LO: To know what the difference between irreversible and reversible Reversible or Irreversible When a substance has been created it can sometimes be turned back into its original states Sometimes when you have changed the state of a material, you cannot change it back to its original state

15 Separating Mixtures ...how could you separate this mixture?
Mixing sulphur and iron... LO: To understand how mixtures can be separated We can separate mixtures/materials by: Distillation Magnet Evaporation/Boiling Filtration ...how could you separate this mixture?

17 Separating Mixtures: Filtration
LO: To understand how mixtures can be separated Separating Mixtures: Filtration filter paper Mixture (salt, sand, water) filter funnel Mixture (salt and water)

18 Separating Mixtures: Evaporation
LO: To understand how mixtures can be separated Water Evaporating dish Mixture (salt and water) Bunsen burner

19 Filtration: method of separating an insoluble solid from a solution
2. Evaporation: method of separating a soluble solid from a solution

20 Separating Mixtures: Distillation
LO: To understand how distillation works What is happening here? Water Vapour Filtration: method of separating an insoluble solid from a solution Mixture (salt and water) Bunsen burner Water

21 LO: To understand how distillation works
Distillation is a chemical process and it is a mixture made up of two or more liquids with different boiling points. This method has been used a long time for drinks.
