If you have an exam, will you study hard? 1st Conditional If you have an exam, will you study hard?

What’s the use of the 1st Conditional? Often called the "real" conditional because it is used for real or possible situations. These situations take place if a certain condition is met. - If I see Peter, I’ll tell him about the news. In this type of conditional clause we sometimes use “unless” which means 'if ... not'. - I won’t go to the party unless you come with me. (if you don’t come)

Formation of the 1st Conditional PRESENT SIMPLE + WILL FUTURE ( If- clause ) (main clause) - If I save enough money, I’ll buy the car. PRESENT SIMPLE + MAY / CAN / MUST+ INFINITIVE - I may go out tonight If I finish the exercises. - If you go to the party, you must bring some food. - If you phone them, they can take you to the station. PRESENT SIMPLE + IMPERATIVE - If you are free, help me do the cleaning, please.

Note We can also use the structure SHOULD+SUBJET+VERB In this structure we don’t use “if” in the conditional clause. Should you need help, call me. The if clause can be put at the beginning of the sentence or after the main clause. When the If Clause comes first, we separate it from the main clause with a comma. ( , )

Other usages: To make predictions: - If the weather is nice tomorrow, there will be a lot of people on the beach. To make promises: - If you pass the exam, I’ll buy you a motor bike. To make threats: - I’ll tell the director if you don´t behave yourself. To make warnings: - If you don´t take more care, You’ll have an accident.
