Review 1. Notice that the borders of ancient China have seas and mountains. How do you think these geographical features impact China?  Seas and mountains were difficult to cross, making communication, travel, and trade hard in early China. They will isolate China from surrounding places.   2. How do you think the rivers will impact early Chinese societies? Rivers will provide water for drinking and crops, which will allow permanent settlements to form and cities to grow. 3. Choose a place on the map where you think Chinese civilization might have begun, and explain your choice. BE SPECIFIC. Near a river. A place needs fresh water and good farmland in order for a farming village to make a food surplus, and grow into a civilization.

3. On the larger map, which color represents an elevation range of 0 to 650 feet? Dark green. 4. What region is defined by the thick black line? Han Empire, about 220 AD 5. In what range of elevation does the North China Plain lie? 0-650 feet 6. Is this a high or low elevation range? Low elevation 7. Study the physical features that bordered the Han Empire.  How do you think they affected where the Han Empire spread? The Himalaya Mountains prevented the Chinese empire from spreading further south.

Closure section Predict: How do you think the geography of ancient China affected the ancient Chinese people?
