China was the largest of the River Valley Civilizations.
Geographical features make it extremely isolated:
Mountains
Desert
Ocean
China has always been one of the most distinct cultures on the planet.

Present-day China is the third largest country in the world, after Russia and Canada.

4. Inner and Outer China Map
To understand Chinese history, it’s helpful to divide China into two main areas: Outer China and Inner China.
China’s land area was much smaller in ancient times.
Most of ancient Chinese history involves only Inner China.

5. Inner China Life in Inner China
The Outer and Inner China did not become one country until the 1600s C.E.
However, the geography of both areas affected the early settlement and history of China.
Life in Inner China
The fertile land of Inner China supported larger, more settled populations on the North China Plain.
Farmers grew mainly wheat and millet.
They raised cattle, sheep, oxen, pigs, and chickens. 
They herded cattle, water buffalo, and horses.

6. North China Plain A flat at region of grassland.
This region is sometimes called the “Land of the Yellow Earth” because the ground is covered by yellow limestone silt from Gobi Desert.
The river that runs through the plain is also full of yellow silt. The silt gives the river its name, Huang He (Yellow River).
The silt it carries helps fertilize the surrounding lands that makes it a good place in which to settle and grow crops.
