For today, 02/24 Pick up an article AND an article analysis. This is DUE on MONDAY, 02/29! Please don’t throw any rocks  You will need note-taking materials. Today, we are talking about sex. 

Gender Inequality Index (GII) Measures the extent of each country’s gender inequality. Replaced former measures of gender differences (GDI and GEM, fyi). Focuses on three areas: Empowerment  national legislature and high school Labor Force  full time jobs outside home Reproductive Health  maternal mortality and adolescent fertility Status of women is lower in every state 

Gender Inequality Index Rankings, 2014 data High End  (1.) Slovenia (25) (2.) Switzerland (3) (3.) Germany (6) (4.) Denmark (4) (5.) Austria (23) (6.) Sweden (14) (7.) Netherlands (5) (8.) Belgium (21) (9.) Norway (1) (10.) Italy (27) Low End  (155.) Yemen (160) (154.) Niger (188) (153.) Chad (185) (152.) Afghanistan (171) (151.) Ivory Coast (172) (#) = HDI Ranking United States = 55 GII, 8 HDI

FIGURE 9-17 GENDER INEQUALITY INDEX (GII) The lowest GII numbers and therefore the least inequality are in Europe, and the highest numbers are in sub-Saharan Africa.

FIGURE 9-18 EMPOWERMENT : WOMEN IN THE NATIONAL LEGISLATURE The highest numbers of women in national legislature are in Europe, and the lowest numbers are in Southwest Asia & North Africa.

FIGURE 9-19 EMPOWERMENT : WOMEN GRADUDATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL A figure above 1 means that more girls than boys graduate from high school.

FIGURE 9-20 FEMALE LABOR FORCE PARTICIPATION A lower number means that relatively few women participate in the labor force.

FIGURE 9-21 MATERNAL MORTALITY RATIO The maternal mortality ratio is the number of deaths of mothers in childbirth compared to the number of live births.

FIGURE 9-22 ADOLESCENT FERTILITY RATE The adolescent fertility rate is the number of births per women per 1,000 women ages 15 to 19.

Check for Understanding GII measures the extent of gender inequality by looking at measures of: Empowerment Labor force participation Reproductive rights Gender inequality has declined in most countries since 1990

Making the Connection Explain the relationship between the DTM and the GII. This should be two paragraphs minimum and thoroughly explain the connection between women, development, and the demographics of countries.
