Meiosis and Reproduction
Asexual vs. Sexual Reproduction
Genetics is the study of heredity.. Organisms resemble their parents because they inherit their genetic material from their parents.
Cell Division and Types of Reproduction
Types of Asexual Reproduction
Learning Objectives: I can explain…  …how Sexual Reproduction is different from Asexual Reproduction.  …how sex cells are created and how this is different.
Multicellular Organisms. Tissue - a group of similar cells that together perform a specific function in an organism.
Meiosis Making Sex Cells.
DO NOW: TAKE 4 HANDOUTS FORM FRONT  1. Take out Reinforcement Activity.  2. Take 2 colored pencils from the tray and sit quietly and write down HW 
Many organisms reproduce by cell division.
Types ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION. Types of asexual reproduction Fission Single celled organisms, such as paramecium and bacteria, which reproduce by splitting.
Plant Reproduction. the transfer of genetic material from parent to offspring 2 types = sexual or asexual Reproduction.
12.4 – Chromosomes and Inheritance
Reproduction. Asexual Reproduction –Asexual Reproduction- Process by which a SINGLE organism produces offspring that have the same genetic material. –Binary.

Introduction to Plant Reproduction
Reproduction No organism lives forever. Even the oldest tree will eventually die one day. In order for each species, or type of organism, to continue,
Aim: How do organisms reproduce? Who thinks they can define Reproduction? The process by which living things produce other living things like themselves.

Asexual vs. Sexual Reproduction.  Parent cell first copies its DNA  Then divides into 2 separate cells  New cells have a complete copy of parent’s.

Copy Cat: Types of Reproduction 3/15/18 Key Question: Do all organisms reproduce sexually? Initial Thoughts:

Evidence 1: Article - Cornell Notes & Diagram Evidence 1: Article - Cornell Notes & Diagram Read the Copy Cat Reading and take notes in your journal. Set up Cornell Notes Questions & Thinking Info from the Text

Venn Diagram: Asexual Reproduction Sexual Reproduction

Analysis Questions 1 – from the article Classify each of the following as either sexual or asexual reproduction. Explain each answer. An orange cat is mated with a black cat, in hopes of producing a black and orange cat. A cutting is taken from a red-flowered daisy and placed in water to develop roots. Once roots have grown, the new plant is placed in soil and grows to produce another red-flowered daisy. A red-flowered daisy with dull leaves is bred with a white flowered daisy with shiny leaves, with a goal of producing a red-flowered daisy with shiny leaves. A male fish releases sperm cells into the water. One of the sperm cells unites with an egg from a female fish to form a new cell that grows into a new fish. A small worm that lives in water splits in two and each half grows to normal size. The head end grows a tail, and the tail end grows a head.

Analysis Questions 2 What is the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction? Do all multi-cellular organisms perform sexual reproduction? Give evidence. How is asexual reproduction and mitosis similar?

Summary What did you think about how organisms reproduce? What did you learn from your evidence about how organisms reproduce? What are some further thoughts or questions you have about how organisms reproduce?

Reflection If you were given an opportunity to clone yourself, would you do it? Explain

Big Idea Asexual reproduction is when offspring are created from one parent, and are identical to that parent. Marfans and other genetic diseases can only be passed on through our DNA, or inherited.
