SBWAT define asexual reproduction SBWAT define sexual reproduction SBWAT differentiate between asexual and sexual reproduction through comparison. Today’s objectives: By the end of class…

Re production is… the process of creating a new organism (offspring) from one or two parents.

A sexual reproduction: Only one parent produces a new organism (offspring) that is identical to the parent. No need to search for a mate! Can be very fast Types: Binary fission- cell divides to form two identical cells (bacteria) (sea anemones)  split down middle Vegetative- plants grow out, or bulbs Reproduce; plant cuttings! Regeneration- star fish, worms Budding- small new organisms grow Off the sides and break free (sponges, hydra, jellyfish, coral) Spores- cells grow into new fungi (fungi)

Organisms that reproduce in this way… algae bacteria A hydra (budding) Some plants

Sexual Reproduction: Process that involves two parents that combine their genetic material (genes) to produce a new organism (offspring) which differs from the parents. Male and female combine genes In plants, the flower contains male and female parts Some bacteria and yeast actually reproduce sexually

Organisms that reproduce in this way… A lemur paramecium

Differences *Asexual reproduction occurs much faster *Sexual reproduction occurs slower because it requires meiosis and fertilization which take more work and time * Offspring are identical to parents in asexual reproduction– could be a problem if parents have genetic errors *Offspring are different from 2 parents in sexual reproduction because both parents give genetic material (genes) to offspring.

Similarities! Some plants and animals actually reproduce sexually and asexually throughout their lives (plants, jellyfish, worms, fungi) While most bacteria reproduce asexually, some reproduce sexually List other similarities you see in your organizer!

Check for understanding: Why are offspring produced from sexual reproduction genetically different from the parents? Why are offspring produced from asexual reproduction genetically identical to the parent?

Now answer your “AFTER” questions. You may use your notes from this slide. Once you have finished those, move on to the checkout. You may NOT use notes for the checkout.
