1 Definition: Asexual Reproduction
A single parent passes genetic information to the offspring which will produce an exact genetic copy.

2 Asexual strategy example 1
Example: Binary fission Description: The parent organism divides into two separate organisms called daughters. Type of organism: Bacteria (Kingdom Monera)

3 Asexual strategy example 2
Example: Budding Description: A cell “bud” grows on the parent organisms. It develops on the parent then breaks off. Type of organism: Hydra (Kingdom: Animal) Lives in the ocean

4 Asexual strategy example 3
Example: Spore production (Sporogenesis) Description: Spores are formed through mitosis and dispersed like seeds. (NOTE: There are other ways spores are formed.) Type of organism: mushrooms (Kingdom: Fungi)

5 Asexual strategy example 4
Example: Fragmentation Description: A new organism grows and fully develops from a piece or fragment of the parent. Type of organism: Segmented worms (Kingdom: Animal)

6 Sexual Reproduction Definition- Two parents produce offspring that have genetic characteristics from both parents. By means of Fertilization: Definition: Fertilization- The combining of male (sperm) and female (egg) to produce a zygote that has half the DNA of each parent.

7 Two Types of Fertilization
1. External Fertilization “Spawning” Eggs are layed in water and male releases sperm near them. Type of organism: Salamanders and Newts Type: Fish Type: Frogs and Toads

8 2. Internal Fertilization Description: Eggs are fertilized inside of the female’s reproductive tract. Type of organism: Snakes Type of organism: Mammals (Whales, kangaroos, humans) Birth live young, also flowering plants Type of organism: Birds lay eggs after fertilization
