1 Cell reproduction notes
2014

2 Where do cells come from??
Remember the Cell Theory… “All cells come from other cells” How do cells make other cells? They reproduce!

3 Cell reproduction What is it?
The process by which cells produce new cells. Why do it? The cell got too big! It wants to make sure its DNA will be passed on Replace worn out cells

4 There are 2 types of reproduction.
How do cells reproduce? There are 2 types of reproduction. ASEXUAL SEXUAL -Occurs in simple organisms -Requires 1 parent cell -Occurs in complex organisms -Requires 2 parent cells

5 ASEXUAL METHODS 2. Budding Regeneration

6 ASEXUAL METHODS Mitosis (also known as Cell Division)
DNA doubles, then cell splits Results in 2 genetically identical “daughter” cells

7 Summary of Asexual Reproduction:
It creates genetically identical offspring! There is NO variety at all

8 Sexual Reproduction, on the other hand…
Very different from asexual reproduction! Lots of variety amongst the offspring

9 SEXUAL REPRODUCTION Method
Fertilization Each parent cell (sperm & egg) have ½ set of DNA Each sperm & egg cell has a unique ½ set of DNA!

10 Fertilization Fertilized cell is called a zygote, and it has a full set of DNA (½ + ½ = 1) The zygote grows through mitosis

11 Let’s compare the offspring
Asexual Reproduction Sexual Reproduction -All genetically identical! -No variation at all -They are essentially clones of the parents -All genetically different* -Each sperm & egg cell that is formed is different, so no offspring can be identical *Exception: identical twins
