Today’s Agenda… Bellringer: What are the characteristics of asexual reproduction? Notes on Sexual Reproduction Homework

Review What is reproduction? What are the different types of asexual reproduction?

Today’s Goal… I can compare and contrast sexual and asexual reproduction.

Cloning Happens in asexual reproduction Making copies of an organism The clone receives DNA from just one parent In 1997 we cloned a sheep

Sexual Reproduction Requires 2 parents; male and female The offspring is like both parents It is a combination of the mother and father’s DNA

Sexual Reproduction DNA is found in the nucleus in chromosomes Every human has 46 chromosomes in each cell

Sexual Reproduction The offspring is created when the male and female sex cells combine Each sex cell contains half of the DNA that the offspring needs (only 23 chromosomes) This process is called fertilization 23 chromosomes + 23 chromosomes = 46

Mitosis vs. Meiosis Cell processes Mitosis creates new cells with 46 chromosomes each This is how you grow and develop! Meiosis creates sex cells (egg and sperm) each with only 23 chromosomes During fertilization two sex cells come together to produce offspring with 46 chromosomes

BrainPop Asexual vs. Sexual Reproduction

Assignment! Create a Venn diagram to compare what you have learned about sexual and asexual reproduction

Homework Due tomorrow Page 597 #1-5
