Cell Respiration

Respiration Respiration The process by which food molecules (glucose) are broken down by cells to release energy is called respiration.

Respiration Where does this take place? Mitochondria Cristae Takes place in cells, more specifically mitochondria The raw materials are glucose and oxygen (the products from photosynthesis) Show them how formula is reversed. (You could make them tell you the products and reactants (raw materials)) http://www.tu-bs.de/institute/botanik/plastid.html

glucose + O2 ---> CO2 +H2O + energy Respiration Equation of Respiration: The chemical equation of respiration is: glucose + O2 ---> CO2 +H2O + energy products reactants

Where do the reactants for respiration come from? glucose + O2 The raw materials are glucose and oxygen (the products from photosynthesis) Show them how formula is reversed. (You could make them tell you the products and reactants (raw materials))

Cellular Respiration Glucose (C6H12O6) ATP ATP Glycolysis H Starts with glucose. Make sure to explain that ATP is used to start reaction. Glucose is broken down in half, hydrogens are broken off (energy is produced) and glucose is turned into pyruvic acid. The type of respiration that occurs depends on the presence of oxygen. Pyruvic acid Fermentation No O2 present Aerobic Respiration

Glycolysis Process of splitting glucose into pyruvate 2 ATP molecules and 2 pyruvates are produced 2 ATP Glucose Pyruvate

Aerobic vs Anerobic Aerobic Anaerobic Processes using oxygen Processes without use of oxygen

Anaerobic Respiration This is called fermentation. Is oxygen present? Fermentation Alcohol Fermentation EX: yeast Ethyl alcohol + carbon dioxide Lactic Acid Fermentation Lactic acid produced EX: muscles

If oxygen is absent... Anaerobic Respiration Lactic acid fermentation No ATP produced Lactic acid produced (makes muscles sore) Alcoholic Fermentation Makes beer, wine, bread rise

Aerobic Respiration Glycolysis Is this with or without O2? ATP H2O Is this with or without O2? With oxygen. Pyruvic acid goes into Kreb’s cycle.

If oxygen is present... Aerobic Respiration Pyruvate Enters the mitochondria Kreb’s Cycle Pyruvate converted to 24 molecules of ATP Electron Transport Chain Produces 6 ATP using electrons from glycolysis

Cycle of Energy in Life Glucose and O2 CO2 and H2O ATP Process: Photosynthesis Organism: Plant Place Occurs: Chloroplast Glucose and O2 CO2 and H2O ATP Process: Respiration Organism: ALL Place occurs: Mitochondria/ Cytoplasm Cycle of Energy in Life

Reflection Questions 1. What molecule do animal cells get get there energy from? 2. What is happening during glycolysis? 3. Can more ATP be made in aerobic or anaerobic respiration? 4.Where does aerobic respiration take place? 5. Explain the difference between Aerobic and Anaerobic?
