1 Chapter 3.4 Respiration

2 How do AUTOTROPHS and HETEROTROPHS get energy from food?
Cellular Respiration

3 What is the difference between Breathing and Cellular Respiration?

4 Cellular Respiration Happens in Mitochondria

5 Cellular Respiration Has 3 Stages
Glycolysis = Breaks glucose in half, makes ATP Kreb’s Cycle = Releases energy and CO2 ATP Synthesis = Makes ATP molecules & H2O Kreb’s Cycle Glycolysis ATP Synthesis

6 Cellular Respiration Has 3 Stages
Glycolysis = Breaks glucose in half, makes ATP Glucose is too big to go into the mitochondria. Glucose is broken in half. Energy is released every time a bond is broken. ATP molecule is formed with the released energy. Glycolysis

7 Cellular Respiration Has 3 Stages
Kreb’s Cycle = Releases energy and CO2 Carbon breaks off from the half-glucose molecule. Carbon (C) combines with oxygen (O2) to form carbon dioxide (CO2) Energy released powers the next stage Kreb’s Cycle

8 Cellular Respiration Has 3 Stages
ATP Synthesis = Makes ATP molecules & H2O Energy (released from the Kreb’s cycle) is captured in ATP molecules. A lot of ATP is made. H2O is made. ATP Synthesis

9 Releasing Energy From Food Molecules

10 Compare Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
What similarities and differences do you see? Brainstorm with your partner.

11 Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

12 Cellular Respiration Equation
How does this equation compare to photosynthesis’ equation?

13 Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

14 Cellular Respiration Requires Oxygen
What happens when there is no oxygen? What do you think? Can cells still make energy? Will cells die? What does aerobic and anaerobic exercise mean? Discuss with your partner.

15 Bacteria in mud What about cells living in mud, how do they survive without oxygen?

16 Aerobic vs Anaerobic Aerobic means with oxygen
Anaerobic means without oxygen Cells make a lot of energy using oxygen in aerobic cellular respiration. Without oxygen, cells make a little energy by anaerobic cellular respiration (FERMENTATION)

17 Lactic Acid Fermentation
The process of making ATP energy without using oxygen in animal cells. This happens after oxygen in the cell is used up. For example, during a sprint. Result: muscle cells make ATP and lactic acid (lactic acid makes you sore)

18 Alcoholic Fermentation
The process of making ATP energy without using oxygen in yeast cells. Glucose is broken down to release energy, carbon dioxide and alcohol. People use yeast for making bread, beer and wine. CO2 gas makes bubbles bread rises beer foams

19 Review: What does this picture show?
1. 3. 4. 5. 2. Discuss with your partner. Identify what is happening at each step.

20 Compare Respiration and Fermentation
Both Work with your partner. Fill in the chart.
