1 Cellular Respiration

2 Chemical Energy & Food If I offered you a choice between $20 in cash, or a check for $20, which would you take?

3 Chemical Energy & Food ATP – the energy currency of the cell
It’s like cash in the cell 1. All parts of the cell can use it for energy

4 Cellular Respiration 2. Cellular Respiration is the process that makes energy(ATP) in your body

5 Cellular Respiration 3. Occurs in the cytoplasm and mitochondria

6 Cellular Respiration Words
Oxygen + Glucose  Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy (ATP)

7 Cellular Respiration Chemical Formulas
O2 + C6H12O6  CO2 + H2O + ATP (energy)

8 Does This Formula Look Familiar?
O2 + C6H12O6  CO2 + H2O + ATP (energy)

9 Aerobic Respiration 4. Takes place when oxygen is present

10 Anaerobic Respiration
5. Takes place when oxygen is NOT present

11 If Anaerobic Step 1 = Glycolysis (no oxygen needed)
Happens in cytoplasm

12 Glycolysis 6. Glycolysis One glucose is broken into 2 pyruvates
Makes 2 ATP

13 Cellular Respiration Step 2 = Lactic Acid Fermentation

14 Step 2: Lactic Acid Fermentation
occurs when NO oxygen is present 2 ATP produced

15 Step 2: Lactic Acid Fermentation
Causes muscles to become sore because lactic acid builds up Alcohol is made when bacteria do fermentation

16 So If NO Oxygen (anaerobic)
4 total ATP made

17 If Aerobic Step 1 = Glycolysis (no oxygen needed) Still 2 ATP made

18 Step 2: Krebs Cycle (happens in Mitochondria)
Pyruvates made in glycolysis break down more 2 ATP produced

19 Total So Far Glycolysis = 2ATP Krebs Cycle = 2ATP 4 total ATP

20 Step 3: Electron Transport Chain (needs oxygen)
Electrons from Krebs cycle used to make more ATP 34 ATP produced

21 Total Glycolysis = 2ATP Aerobic/Anaerobic = 2ATP
Electron Transport Chain = 34 ATP 38 total ATP!

22 Biochemical Pathway The products of photosynthesis are the reactants of cellular respiration

23 Energy & Exercise Quick energy – when anaerobic respiration takes place in your body, lactic acid is formed This can lead to muscle soreness Long-Term Energy – Use cellular respiration to produce energy. Exercising or activities that last for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Best form for weight control.
