DO NOW Why did America not like the Soviet Union after WW2? 2. What did the Soviet Union Control after WW2? 3. Why did people not like life in Eastern Germany?

The United States and the Soviet Union emerged from World War II as world powers, triggering a rivalry over ideology and national security. This started the Cold War.

United States The Soviet Union A dictatorship style government. A democratic government.

Capitalism An economic system in which exchange of wealth is made and maintained mostly by private individuals or corporations.

Communism An economic system based on the holding of all property in common, all property ownership belongs to the community as a whole, with a shared outcome.

NATO- North Atlantic Treaty Organization Military alliance of democratic states in Europe and North America.

Warsaw Pact Military alliance of communist states in Europe and Asia.

• The United States supported Western Europe.

• The Soviet Union controlled Eastern European countries.

Differences in goals and ideologies between the United States and the Soviet Union (the two superpowers).
