Objective 2.03 Distinguish between the economic and social issue that led to sectionalism and nationalism.

Industrial Revolution Social and economic reorganization that took place as machines took the place of hand tools – large scale factory production developed in the north (New England) Begun in Great Britain

Industrial Revolution influences Eli Whitney Interchangeable parts

Plantation System South – fueled by slave labor Turned the South into a Cotton Kingdom (after the cotton gin)

Who else influenced agriculture? John Deere – invented the steel plow, allowed farmers on Great Plains to more easily plow through tough, dry soil

Cyrus McCormick Invented automatic reaper in 1840s, allowed fewer laborers to harvest more acres of wheat, caused many farm workers to move to cities.

How did people transport their crops? Through internal improvements – transportation, etc.

Examples of Internal Improvements? Erie Canal – opened in 1825, linked Lake Erie to the Atlantic Ocean via the Hudson River

How did one travel on canals? Steamboat 1st commercial steamboat built by Robert Fulton (Clermont) - 1807

How did people communicate over long distances? Telegraph Invented (1837) by Samuel Morse. Vastly increased the speed of communication across great distances.
