The Human Body: The Reproductive System

Organs of the Male Reproductive System Penis Urethra Vas Deferens Scrotum Testes Prostate Gland Bladder* *Not a part of the reproductive system

Male Reproductive System 1. Bladder*: holds urine prior to urination. Urine leaves the bladder via the urethra. 2. Urethra: a tube which allows urine and semen to exit the body. Connects to the bladder 3. Vas deferens: a tube which connects the testes to the urethra and allows semen to exit the body. 4. Testes: two glands which produce sperm and hormones (testosterone) 5. Prostate gland: secretes fluid that nourishes and protects sperm.

Organs of the Female Reproductive System Vagina Cervix Uterus Fallopian Tubes Ovary

Female Reproductive System 1. Ovaries: production and release of eggs. This release of the egg is called ovulation. 2. Fallopian Tubes: Takes egg from ovary to uterus. Where fertilization occurs. 3. Uterus: houses fetus. (womb)

The Menstrual Cycle and Fertilization Egg is fertilized by sperm = zygote Implantation: fertilized egg (zygote) attaches to uterus lining and begins to develop If the egg isn’t fertilized it’s released along with the inside lining of the uterus (Menstruation)

Pregnancy Amniotic sac: bag of fluid inside womb, where baby develops and grows. Placenta: attached to lining of the womb, it keeps blood supply separate from mothers. Umbilical Cord: connects placenta to baby. Carries nutrients and oxygen into the baby’s bloodstream.
