1 Male & Female Reproductive Systems

2 Female Reproductive System
Know the location of the following items: *Egg *Ovary *Fallopian Tube *Uterus *Endometrium *Cervix *Vagina

3 Female Reproductive System
Ovaries: Release hormone estrogen and progesterone. Contains the eggs for fertilization, releases approx. one per month when they mature. When the egg is release, this is called Ovulation. Fallopian tubes: Extend from the uterus to the ovaries. Acts as a passageway for the released egg to make it to the uterus. Uterus: Pear shaped organ where a fertilized egg can implant and allow for a baby to develop. Endometrium: Soft tissue lining of the uterus.

4 Female Reproductive System cont.
Menstruation: Occurs approx. every 28 days. The endometrium breaks down and is flushed from the female body. Acts as a “reset” function for the female to mature another egg and have it fertilized. Cervix: Entrance to the uterus. This is located within the vagina. The cervix must dilate (open) 10 cm for the infant to pass through. Vagina: Passage from the cervix to the outside of the female’s body. Also known as the “birth canal”.

5 Male Reproductive System
Know the location of the following items: *Bladder *Penis *Prostate Gland *Testis (Testes) *Scrotum *Urethra

6 Male Reproductive System
Testes: Releases the hormone Testosterone into the bloodstream. The place in the body where sperm mature and wait to be released. Scrotum: The muscular sac that contains the testes. Helps regulate the temperature of the testes to maximize sperm production. Sperm: The male sex cell, combines with female egg cell during fertilization.

7 Male Reproductive System cont.
Ejaculation: The process in which Sperm and Semen are released from the male body. Prostate gland, Cowper’s gland, Seminal vesicles: These three glands release different fluids during ejaculation to assist the sperm with survival outside the body. This mixture is called Semen. Urethra: Tube that extends from prostate gland to the outside of the male body that allows for semen and urine (from the bladder) to be excreted. Penis: The external male sex organ, contains the urethra.
