CHAPTER 25.3 ALLERGIES ASTHMA DIABETES AND ARTHRITIS

WHAT ARE CHRONIC DISEASES? CHRONIC DISEASE- THIS MEANS THAT THE DISEASES ARE PRESENT CONTINUOUSLY OR RECUR FREQUENTLY OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. TYPES OF CHRONIC DISEASES INCLUDE: ALLERGIES ASTHMA DIABETES ARTHRITIS THESE DISEASES AFFECT MILLIONS OF PEOPLE.

ALLERGIES ALLERGY- IS A SPECIFIC REACTION OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM TO A FOREIGN AND FREQUENTLY HARMLESS SUBSTANCE. ALLERGIES AFFECT 40-50 MILLION PEOPLE. ALLERGENS- ARE SUBSTANCES THAT CAUSE ALLERGIES. TYPES INCLUDE: POLLEN FOODS DUST MOLD SPORES CHEMICALS INSECT VENOM MEDICATION

DIAGNOSING ALLERGIES: SYMPTOMS INCLUDE: -SNEEZING -ITCHY EYES -RUNNY NOSE -HIVES -SWELLING OF MOUTH AND THROAT -TROUBLE BREATHING DIAGNOSING ALLERGIES: THREE COMMON METHODS BLOOD TEST FOOD ELIMINATION DIET SKIN TEST TREATING ALLERGIES: -AVOID ALLERGENS -MEDICATION -ALLERGIES CAN TRIGGER ASTHMA ATTACKS.

ASTHMA ASTHMA- AN INFLAMMATORY CONDITION IN WHICH THE SMALL AIRWAYS IN THE LUNGS BECOME NARROWED, CAUSING DIFFICULTY BREATHING. COMMON ASTHMA TRIGGERS INCLUDE: AIR POLLUTION PET DANDER TOBACCO SMOKE MOLD POLLEN DUST MITES 17 MILLION PEOPLE HAVE ASTHMA AND EACH YEAR 5,000 DIE FROM THE DISEASE.

WHEN AN ASTHMA ATTACK IS TRIGGERED, THE MUSCLES IN THE BRONCHIAL WALLS TIGHTEN AND PRODUCE EXTRA MUCUS CAUSING WHEEZING AND TROUBLE BREATHING.

MANAGING ASTHMA 1. MONITOR THE CONDITION-RECOGNIZE WARNING SIGNS OF AN ATTACK. (SHORTNESS OF BREATH, CHEST TIGHTNESS, COUGHING OR SNEEZING) 2. MANAGE THE ENVIRONMENT- REDUCE ASTHMA TRIGGERS IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT.                                            3. MANAGE STRESS- RELAXATION AND STRESS MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES CAN BE HELPFUL. 4. TAKE MEDICATION- MEDICINE CAN BE TAKEN TO PREVENT FLARE UPS, RELIEVE SYMPTOMS, AND RELAX AND WIDEN AIRWAYS.

DIABETES DIABETES- A CHRONIC DISEASE THAT AFFECTS THE WAY BODY CELLS CONVERT FOOD INTO ENERGY. ONE MILLION NEW CASES EACH YEAR AND THERE IS NO CURE FOR DIABETES. THIS IS WHEN THE PERSON NEEDS TO TAKE INSULIN IN ORDER FOR THE GLUCOSE TO BE USED FOR ENERGY.

SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES PAGE: 705

TWO TYPES OF DIABETES TYPE 1 DIABETES- APPEARS SUDDENLY AND PROGRESSES QUICKLY. (5-10% HAVE THIS TYPE) THE BODY DOES NOT PRODUCE INSULIN, WHICH CAUSES THE SUGAR IN THE BLOOD TO BUILD UP WHICH CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE EYES, KIDNEYS, NERVES, AND HEART. TYPE 2 DIABETES- MOST OFTEN APPEARS IN PEOPLE OVER 40 YRS OLD.(90-95% HAVE THIS TYPE) THE BODY DOES NOT MAKE ENOUGH INSULIN OR USE IT PROPERLY.

ARTHRITIS ARTHRITIS- IS A GROUP OF MORE THAN 100 DIFFERENT DISEASES THAT CAUSE PAIN AND LOSS OF MOVEMENT IN THE JOINTS. -ONE OF THE MOST COMMON MEDICAL PROBLEMS IN THE WORLD AND THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF DISABILITY IN THE U.S. -1 OUT OF 6 PEOPLE HAVE ARTHRITIS. MOST COMMON TYPES OF ARTHRITIS: 1. OSTEOARTHRITIS 2. RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

REDUCING THE RISK OF ARTHRITIS STRATEGIES INCLUDE: 1. CONTROLLING WEIGHT-REDUCES STRESS ON JOINTS AND WEAR ON CARTILEDGE.                             2. PREVENTING SPORT INJURIES- WARM-UP, STRENGTH TRAIN, USE APPROPRIATE EQUIPMENT. 3. PROTECT AGAINST LYME DISEASE- THIS IS A BITE FROM A DEER TICK.
