Causes of WWI NATIONALISM ALLIANCES IMPERIALISM MILITARISM

NATIONALISM Loyalty to your homeland Willing to kill or go to war Potentially lead to racism

Alliances Germany and France involved in multiple conflicts Both start looking for support in the event of a future war Triple Entente- “Allies” France Britain Russia Triple Alliance- “Central Powers” Germany Austria-Hungary Italy

Alliances 2 Major Problems: 1) increases suspicion and fear between countries 2) increases the size of conflicts

Alliances

Imperialism Countries expanding their economy Control of Colonies = More Resources Raw Materials, New Markets, and Power France, Great Britain, and the USA all had colonies Germany did not Countries began to fight over control

Imperialism

Militarism Power = Large Armies and Navies Peace = Preparing for War If you are strong, no one will attack you Arms Race: Countries wanted to make bigger armies and more deadly weapons Example- Germany expanded their Navy Direct threat to Great Britain's Naval Power

Causes of WWI NATIONALISM ALLIANCES IMPERIALISM MILITARISM Fight for your Country ALLIANCES Increase suspicion & size of the conflict IMPERIALISM Conflict over expanding economic control MILITARISM Growth of Military Power
