North Carolina: A Southern Colony: 1622-1729 Chapter 6

CAROLANA 1629 – The new king, Charles I, son of King James, granted a charter to Sir Robert Heath, Charles’ attorney general.

Carolana From Carolus, Latin for Charles North to South: North of Florida to Edenton, NC. East to West: From the Atlantic to the Pacific!

1638: Heath gave the colony to a friend. Heath failed in attracting settlers. 1638: Heath gave the colony to a friend. 1642: English civil war. King Charles I vs. Parliament(English gov’t.) Parliament wins. 1649: Charles executed. Monarchy abolished.

Oliver Cromwell, commander of Parliament rules for 11 years. Died 1660.

Monarchy is restored. Charles II regains throne from dead father. 1663: To repay debts for regaining throne, Charles II gives the 8 men who helped him, Carolina. Those 8 men are the Lord Proprietors.

1665: Land grant increased! North to Chesapeake Bay South to Central Florida (Spanish ruled.)

Prerogative vs. Popular Parties Prerogative Party Who: Lord Proprietors. Governor. Council. Desire: Government Independent from the people. Popular Party Who: Settlers before Lord Proprietors. Desire: Will of the people for the people.

Colonial NC and America Lord Proprietors – These 8 men established the first counties and gave land grants to settlers. They appointed the government.

Culpepper’s Rebellion – Colonist John Culpepper led a rebellion against the Proprietor’s establishment of the English Navigation Acts. (Acts giving England money, controlling and limiting trade.)

Cary’s Rebellion (1699) – Thomas Cary led a rebellion against governors who enforced Anglican laws. (These laws forced all people to support the Anglican, English Church. They also increased taxes and gave them too much power.)

Tuscarora War (1711) – Native Americans who attacked settlements killing 130 settlers because colonists cheated them in trade, took their land and forced some into slavery.

Pirates – Pirates used NC coves and inlets as hiding places for attack. Governors sent out troops to kill and destroy pirates in NC. Blackbeard was the most famous NC pirate.
