Renaissance-interest in learning & arts are renewed-comes from French word for ”rebirth” Renewed interest in Greek & Latin language Began to see individual people could make a difference Birthplace of the Renaissance was Italy. Italy had become wealthy in the 1300s. Italy became more urban allowing for more discussion, growth of wealth, and customers for art. Italy built large fleets of ships. Italian merchants & bankers loaned money to kings in Europe.

Made many more books available to people. People were learning to read and think for themselves. 1455-Gutenberg prints first European book, the Christian Bible. More books were printed in the first 50 years of the printing press than had been printed up to 1450. ½ of the 40,000 books printed by 1500 were religious.
