What makes you stand out? Key message for you today is 2nd year is about getting substantial work experience. When you apply for jobs after graduation next year they will be looking for relevant work experience on your CV, and this is the year to get it. Also a great way to explore what you do and don’t like doing, especially if you’re not sure what type of job you want when you finish university. Hands up if last year you were involved in extra curricular activities at QM or position of responsibility off campus via your own interests? Your mission: Get substantial work experience in year 2…

But it helps to have an idea of which areas you are likely to want to pursue before you start getting work experience, so you know what type of experience will be useful and which skills you might need to develop If you don’t know what you want to do, then you can get information and inspiration by meeting and chatting to employers or alumni at one of our 250+ on-campus careers events this year. If you do know what you want to do, then these events are also a great way to start building or growing your network. You can also start to research different types of jobs online through the Careers QM+ which has industry guides to different sectors – or the Prospects website, which has 100’s of online profiles describing different graduate jobs. Finally, you may find it useful to talk to a CC about your ideas and options in a 1-2-1 confidential careers appointment.
