3 Part time work - for money, experience or skills???
Money: “I need to earn money to socialise and explore tourist attractions in London” Skills: “I need to develop my transferable skills so I can show an employer I have what they want” Thkning about why you need part time work will help you work out what type of work to do . Do you need it for money, gaining skills and getting relevant career experience. Money – some of you just need to earn some extra cash. Is that you? If so, it doesn’t matter what type of job you do as long as it pays enough. Skills – In the UK (unlike other countries) employers really value the transferable skills that you bring e.g. leadership, team work, working to a deadline, initiative.. They don’t required you to gain them in the same work environment as you plan to work in. Have you done anything outside of your study so far that shows you have transferable skills? If you don’t need money but you do need to gain evidence you have transferable skills then there are lots of unpaid voluntary opportunities you can take up that will give you these skills. You need to have done activities which use transferable skills outside of your course if you are going to compete for UK work experience / jobs. For those who plan to work o/s the relevant experience is more important than the transferable skills. Experience – some of you don’t need the money but you do want to get UK experience in your desired career area on your CV. Is that you? Relevant experience: “I need to get some professional experience on my CV in my desired career area” e.g leadership, teamwork, organisation, proactivity

4 Work – for money Examples: on campus Events worker, library shelf stacker, marketing assistant, student ambassador, alumni phone campaign caller …. Examples: off campus Shops, restaurants and bars, tutoring, film extra, receptionist Acknowledge some countries don’t have the concept of time time work.

5 How do I find it? Search ‘qtemps’ and ‘qinterns’ on the vacancies tab for on and off campus Opportunities Select the ‘part time work’ filter Select the ‘Part time and Holiday’ tab Explain what experience works is

6 How did you find out about your part-time job?
Take your CV to shops / cafes How did you find out about your part-time job? It was quite a challenge for me as I chose to randomly drop my CVs in almost everywhere possible, from high street retail outlets, to superstores and many more. At a later date one of the Starbucks stores needed a member of staff. I was called for interview and got the job. Nafis Ahmad, QM student from Bangladesh Explain that you don’t always get something as soon as you apply. One method is to be proactive rather than just reply to job adverts. Like this student….

7 Work - for skills Examples: on campus
QMSU volunteering, course rep, PASS mentor, QMedia contributor, active society member or committee leader

8 How do I get it? Attend Freshers Fair

9 Work – for career experience
Examples: off campus Part time paid internship Part time job in your area of career interest For experience – sometimes part time work available in area of interest and you can find it advertised on relevant job website but not always part time work available. If you want experience you may need to write to places and see if they will take you for a few hours a week or offer your time in reading wk / vacations. We call this a speculative work experience application. Whatever type of work, a very important thing for those whose langauge isn’t first language ENGLISH, part time work is a brilliant opportunity to become more fluent, mix with a diverse range of people, pick up the professional culture in the UK and learn business english. NB The internship must be paid. Unpaid internships are illegal. Also, if you are working your maximum of 20 hours, you can do voluntary work with QMSU on top of that or other similar volunteer work with a charity but you can’t do an unpaid internship or any kind of work that the company should really employ someone to carry out.
