Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia Southern Colonies Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia

Mason Dixon Line Was the survey to settle the boundary dispute between Maryland and Penn. Became the dividing line between the northern colonies and the southern colonies

Virginia Difficult living conditions and disease produced a high death rate. 1640---10,000 settlers 1670--- 40,000 settlers Native American population shrank from disease and violence with farmers planting tobacco Farmers took over, planting tobacco

Got $, Got Best Land in Virginia Wealthy land owners bought best land. Poor colonists had no land for themselves. Angry young men because without owning land they couldn’t vote. Poor farmers moved inland to develop farms, angered Native Americans

Nathaniel Bacon Nathaniel Bacon organized frontier settlers who began to attack Native Americans so they could move west to establish farms. Governor declared Bacon a rebel! Bacon attacks Jamestown and burns it to the ground. There was no way to stop colonists from moving west into Native American lands.

Maryland George Cavert. Catholic was given a charter for a colony. He set up Maryland as a colony safe for Catholics. Passed Act of Toleration, welcomed all Christians and male Christians had the right to vote. Beginning of “religious freedom” being part of the law.

The Carolinas As Virginia settlers moved south, King Charles granted a charter for a “Carolina” colony. North part developed slowly, poor harbors and rivers Southern part grew quickly, due to sugar, rice, and indigo The south had many more slaves

American Long Grain Rice Crops of the Carolinas: Rice, Indigo The primary export. Rice was still an exotic food in England. Was grown in Africa, so planters imported West African slaves. By 1710  black slaves were a majority in Carolina. American Long Grain Rice

The Split of Carolina Northern part of Carolina colony shared a border with VA. VA dominated by rich planters who were members Church of England. Dissenters from VA moved south to northern Carolina. Poor farmers with little need for slaves. Traits of North Carolinians Non religious, hospitable to pirates, resistance to authority. North Carolina Colony established 1712  NC officially separated from SC

Georgia Founded for 2 reasons As a land buffer between South Carolina and the Spanish territory of Florida. Place where there would be protection for English debtors. Wealthy Englishman, James Oglethorpe headed the founding of this colony

Georgia: Debtors Haven Oglethorpe wanted Georgia to be small farms without slaves so debtors could have a place to start their lives over and get out of debt.

The Southern Colonies Large plantations. Grew crops that promoted the use of slaves. South was divided between: small number of wealthy white landholders with slaves on large plantations, mostly in the coastal plane. Back country: poor roads, far from the coast, isolated farms, one- room shacks. Back country lifestyle sharp contrast from wealthy landowners along the coast.
