Human Immunodeficiency Virus Human– a virus effecting human Immunodeficiency –attacks a person’s immune system, causing it to become deficient Virus – A virus is a type of germ. Viruses need living cells to grow and reproduce

process allowing people with HIV to live longer, healthier lives. Even though there is no cure, ARV drugs can slow down the replication process allowing people with HIV to live longer, healthier lives. Video on picture

ANTIRETROVIRAL (ARV) DRUGS: Today there are over 31 FDA approved antiretroviral (ARV) drugs to treat HIV/AIDS. AZT is the most common drug used

It’s VERY important to remember that people infected with HIV who are on ARV drugs can STILL TRANSMIT HIV to others!

FACTS ABOUT STDs HIV/AIDS and many STDs cause few or no symptoms in the early stages of infection. Some STDs, but not all, can be cured by antibiotics (only bacterial infections). STDs and HIV/AIDS are serious risks to your health.

RISK FACTORS

The only strategy that is ELIMINATING THE RISK Abstinence The only strategy that is 100 % effective in preventing STDs. You may face pressure to engage in sexual activity, but you can say no.

REDUCING THE RISK OF STDs Delay the age of first sexual intimacy. Limit the number of sexual partners. Avoid using alcohol and other drugs. Avoid sharing needles and other equipment for drug injection, body piercing, or tattooing. Avoid sexual intimacy with high-risk partners. Get tested for STDs and HIV. Use male latex condoms.

BELIEF VS. REALITY

GET TESTED If you think you may have been exposed to an STD or HIV, get tested. Confidentiality is a legal requirement that prohibits healthcare providers from revealing patients’ names or test results. Doctors usually test for several STDs at once. HIV testing may be done separately. If the STD can be treated, the doctor will prescribe medications. Avoid all sexual activity while you are infected.
