SQL Server 2012 Licensing Overview

SQL Server 2012 Pricing & Licensing Summary LEADING TCO Continued high-value leader among major vendors Software Assurance offers significant benefits and easy, extended transitions to new licensing Enterprise Agreement customers gain best transition to SQL Server 2012 and greatest savings CLOUD-OPTIMIZED Flexible Virtualization licensing Support for hybrid scenarios that span on-premises, private cloud and public cloud In summary, SQL Server 2012 pricing and licensing is designed to better align to the way our customers purchase database and business intelligence products. The new pricing and licensing offers a range of benefits: Leading TCO: Microsoft continues to be the high value leader among major vendors. Customers with Software Assurance will get significant benefits and ways to help ease the transition to new licensing models. Customers with Enterprise Agreements will have the best transition to SQL Server 2012, and they will realize the greatest cost savings. Cloud-Optimized: SQL Server 2012 is the most virtualization-friendly database, with simplified virtualization licensing, the flexibility to license per virtual machine, and excellent support for Hyper-V. Customers also have the ability to support hybrid scenarios that span on-premises, private cloud and public cloud. Pay as You Grow: The new streamlined editions are aligned to database and business intelligence needs. For datacenter scenarios, licensing is better aligned to hardware capacity. For business intelligence, licensing is aligned to user-based access. PAY AS YOU GROW Streamlined editions aligned to database and business intelligence needs For datacenter scenarios, licensing better aligned to hardware capacity For business intelligence, licensing aligned to user-based access

THE PRINCIPAL EDITIONS OF SQL SERVER 2012 ARE: Enterprise Edition Business Intelligence (BI) Edition Standard Edition

SQL SERVER 2012 LICENSING MODELS BY EDITION Enterprise Edition: Core licensing only Business Intelligence (BI) Edition: Server/CAL licensing Standard Edition: Core or Server/CAL licensing Note that SQL Server Enterprise can no longer be purchased in a Server/CAL licensing model, and that licensing by Cores has replaced Processor licensing.

SQL Server 2012 SKUs & Licensing Aligned with how businesses consume DB and business intelligence software 2012 Editions Licensing Options Server+CAL Core-based ENTERPRISE High-end datacenter w/ BI Server capabilities Customers pay for the power they need NEW! BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE Enterprise BI projects, user-based licensing Customers pay for the users they need Licensing options for SQL Server 2012 Editions With SQL Server 2012, Microsoft is evolving its licensing to align with how our customers purchase and use database and business intelligence software. This table provides an overview of how each SQL Server 2012 Edition will be licensed: Enterprise Edition will be available exclusively through processing capacity-based licensing, which will now be measured using cores, not processors. This licensing model aligns pricing to processing power, enabling customers to pay for the power they need. Business Intelligence Edition will be available exclusively through Server+CAL licensing. With this edition, we are able to offer the full BI functionality of SQL Server 2012 through user-based or device-based licensing, which is consistent with the way most customers want to purchase BI solutions. Standard Edition will be available through both Server+CAL and core-based licensing. This edition offers flexible licensing options for a wide range of customers with a variety of business needs. STANDARD Departmental, limited scale Choice of model for basic needs

Physical Operating System Environment (POSE) Physical Server Physical Processors Physical Cores Hardware Threads As you see on the right hand side of the screen, SQL Server is often installed in a physical operating system environment, which we will abbreviate as POSE through the rest of the course.

License Hardware Capacity by Cores 2012 Editions Licensing Options Server+CAL Core-based Pay for the power you need Enterprise Cores a precise and flexible measure of capacity for hybrid environments Business Intelligence NEW! Standard Processor licenses with SA receive SQL Server 2012 at no additional cost Physical Server Licensing Virtual Machine Licensing License all physical cores on hardware Unlimited Virtualization with Enterprise Edition under Software Assurance Licensing by cores is a better way to align pricing to hardware capacity so that you pay for the power you need. In addition, cores provide a precise and flexible measure of capacity across physical and virtual environment for simplicity, mobility and to support hybrid environments. Capacity-based licensing, which is available for Enterprise and Standard Editions, is appropriate for database and data warehouse workloads and situations in which users are not easily counted. For processor licenses under Software Assurance, you will receive SQL Server 2012 at no additional cost. Here’s how it works: For physical server licensing, you can license all of the physical cores on the hardware, and with Enterprise Edition under Software Assurance, you’ll get unlimited virtualization. For virtual machine licensing, you will license virtual cores—and with Software Assurance, you have the flexibility of License Mobility across on-premises or cloud deployments. License virtual cores License mobility with Software Assurance Pay only for what you use OR

Core Licensing Examples 1. An Intel server with 4 x 8 core processors requires 32 Core licenses: (8x4) x Core Factor of 1 = 32 2. An Intel server with 2 x 2 core processors requires 8 Core licenses: (2x2) x Core Factor of 2 = 8 3. An AMD server with 2 x 6 core processors requires 9 Core licenses: (2x6) x Core Factor of 0.75 = 9 4. An AMD server with 1 x 6 core processor requires 5 Core licenses: (1x6) x Core Factor of 0.75 = 4.5  5

License by User or Device PRINCIPAL Editions Licensing Options Server+CAL Core-based Pay for the users or devices you need Enterprise Alignment to SharePoint & Office Licensing Business Intelligence NEW! Standard Enterprise Edition Server licenses w/ SA receive SQL Server 2012* License The Server License User or Devices Physical Server Licensing Virtual Machine Licensing Users or Devices License each individual Server Licensing by cores is a better way to align pricing to hardware capacity so that you pay for the power you need. License single virtual machine License mobility with Software Assurance License each user/device SQL Server CALs access any SQL Server OR *EE Server units upgraded to 2012 or bought after General Availability will have 20 core maximum limit for the server. 2012 CALs also required for access.

Server/CAL Licensing Purchase a SQL Server license for each server, and then purchase Client Access Licenses (CALs) for either users or devices: A Device CAL is assigned to the device and allows multiple users to use that device A User CAL is assigned to the user and allows that user to use multiple devices For both types of CAL, the users or devices are licensed to access ANY SQL Server on the network. The SQL CALs can also be used against any SQL Server regardless of platform or edition. Note that even if a user accesses SQL indirectly through another server (for example when using a Line of Business application), a CAL is still required. This is often known as multiplexing. External Users may be licensed with User or Device CALs or via Core licenses.
