Marbury VS Madison 1803 Adams wanted to keep Federalist power in the government (Judicial Branch) Appointed “midnight judges” by the Judiciary Act (1789) William Marbury sued James Madison b/c Madison never delivered the official papers to establish Marbury as a federal judge. John Marshall (2nd Supreme Court Chief Justice) Ruling:

Judiciary Acts of 1789 & 1801 are unconstitutional Attention US Citizens.. Marbury deserves the position as federal judge according to the Judiciary Acts of 1789 & 1801 Judiciary Acts of 1789 & 1801 are unconstitutional Established Judicial Review

NAVY $$$ ISOLATIONISM Jefferson cut the size of the navy Felt there was no need for a large one and it was too expensive

Louisiana Purchase (1803) Bought from Napoleon (France) Cost: $15 million Doubled the size of the United States New western boundary – Rocky Mountains

Lewis & Clark Expedition (1804) Explored the Louisiana Territory with help of Sacajawea

Embargo Act (1807) Barbary Pirates demanded protection $ for ships sailing through the area. So….. The British passed the Orders of Council (1807) – forbade neutral vessels to trade with France THEN…

British government continued their impressments of US sailors As a result…… Napoleon threatened to seize all foreign ships to British areas THEN… British government continued their impressments of US sailors

Only solution…….. Jefferson established the Embargo Act – stopped ALL trade with any foreign country (ISOLATION)
