Chapter 2/Module 2: Computer and managing files These slides will be a guide for the below section of ECDL Module 2. Layout to Control Panel and regional setting. Click search on the large button on the bottom left of your main screen

Layout of Windows The title bar states the name of the application you are in and also the name of the document. The menu bar gives us lists of functions. The minimize button collapses the programme down to the bottom of the screen. The restore button puts the screen back to where it was. Teacher will demonstrate

Calculating Click start, then programs, then accessories and pick calculator or use the search feature. Ask Teacher for demonstrations on anything you don’t understand and please ask questions

Calculator Click start , then all programmes , then accessories and then calculator

Dealing with system crashes The reason we shut down correctly is because the computer closes down in a sequence to protect data and hardware. If your system crashes, click control, alt and delete. All the apps that are running will be displayed here. If the app is not running click end task. This should close the crashed programme. Or click search and task manager to see what programs are running and using up your computers RAM.

Icons On your desktop (main screen) there are lots of icons. The recycle bin: Right click “empty recycle bin” often. From this bin you can restore files. Each file has a different colour and tag. So you can see whether it is Word, PowerPoint (etc.). Folders (e.g.. You can save many word files in a folder. To create a new folder, right click where you save your files, select new folder. Drives = by double clicking my computer, you can see the different drives that exist on your computers. E.g Student files drive. Usually computers have a C drive (at home), which is the main drive of the computer where you have saved stuff. And the D drive is usually your disk drive. However, on a network we create special drives (e.g.. Student and teacher public and private drives. Windows explorer = a place where you go where you can see everything on your computer clearly.

When Arranging any Files Change the view to detailed view, click on name to arrange the files in alpha order. Click on size if you want your biggest size file first Click on type, if you want to sort your files by file type e.g all word files organised together. Click on modify if you want to arrange by seeing your most resent

Click start then Control panel The control panel allows you to configure settings on your computer. The system icon shows us the processing power and memory info. The date and time icon allows us to change the time settings. The display icon allows you to change the look of all your windows and screens. The printer icon allows you to add printers or change your default printers. The keyboard and mouse icons allow you to change the keyboard and mouse settings.

Viewing the computers basic system information. Click start, control panel, double- click the system icon, click on the different grey tabs (e.g. general will show you that we are using windows 7/8 here, the version number, who the computer is registered to, what Intel chips are inside, how much RAM is on the computer and how fast the computer is. Or click search and right click computer information

Regional settings Click start, settings, control panel. If your computer is set to English( Ireland), it means you can use fadás by pressing alt, control and the letter required. Go to your PC and try and find what you typed about now.
