3 Working with Text To open a word processing application – Press Windows on the keyboard then type “Microsoft Word 2010” – Click on Microsoft Word 2010 icon To copy, move text within/between a document – Select the text that you want to copy or move – Press Ctrl + C to Copy or drag to move – Press Ctrl + V to Paste or drop to release 3Lab 03Applied Computing

To paste a screen capture into a document – Open a word document – Take a screen capture with PrtSc key on the keyboard – Press Ctrl + V to paste or right click then Paste To save and name a document – On File tab click Save As – Give a name to the file and select a location for it then click Save 4Lab 03Applied Computing

5 Printing To install a printer – Find the driver online or on a CD/DVD that comes with the printer – Connect the printer with your computer – Install the driver by following the installation wizard To uninstall a printer – Press Windows key then type “Control Panel” – Open Control Panel then click Programs and Features – Double click the printer that you want to uninstall 5Lab 03Applied Computing

To print a test page – Press Windows key then type “Devices and Printers” – Open Devices and Printers then right click on a printer – Click Printer properties then click Print Test Page Set the default printer from an installed list of printers – Open Devices and Printers then right click on a printer – Click on Set as default printer 6Lab 03Applied Computing

Print a document from a word processing application – Open Microsoft Word 2010 then type something – Press Ctrl + P then under Printer select a printer then click Print To view, pause, restart, cancel a print job – Open Devices and Printers then right click on a printer – Click on See what’s printing – Right click on an active print job and select one of the actions 7Lab 03Applied Computing

8 Introducing Files and Folders To understand how an OS organises drives, folders, files in a hierarchical structure – On the Desktop double click This PC icon – Double click Local Disk C or D then double click folder To navigate between drives, folders, sub-folders, files – On the Desktop double click This PC icon – Use the Navigation Pane located on the left-hand-side 8Lab 03Applied Computing

To display file, folder properties like: name, size, location – Right click a file or a folder then click Properties To change view to display files and folders like: tiles, icons, list, details – Right click inside a drive or a folder – Click View and select one of the view styles 9Lab 03Applied Computing

To identify common file types – Open Control Panel then click Folder Options – Click View tab then untick Hide extensions for known file types To create a folder on the Desktop, rename a file, folder – Right click on the desktop then click New then click Folder 10Lab 03Applied Computing

11 Introducing Files and Folders (Cont.) To search for files by properties like name and content – Press Windows and type a file name or a word of from its content View list of recently used files – Press Windows then type “run” – Click Run then type “recent” and click OK 11Lab 03Applied Computing

12 Organising Files and Folders To select a single file or folder – Just click on that file or folder To select a group of adjacent, non-adjacent files or folders – Press Ctrl then click on the files and folders that you want to select 12Lab 03Applied Computing

Sort files in ascending, descending order by name, size, type, date modified – Open a folder that contains files, folders or both – Right click on a blank place inside the folder – Hover the mouse pointer over Sort by – Click one of the options 13Lab 03Applied Computing

14 Organising Files and Folders (Cont.) To copy files, folders between folders, drives – Select them then Copy and Paste them To move files, folders between folders, drives – Select them then Drag and Drop them 14Lab 03Applied Computing

To delete files, folders to the Recycle Bin – Right click on any file(s) and/or folder(s) then click Delete To restore deleted files, folders to their original location – Open Recycle Bin which is located the Desktop – Right click on a file then click Restore To empty the recycle bin – Right click on Recycle Bin then click Empty Recycle Bin 15Lab 03Applied Computing

16 Storage and Compression To view available space on a storage device – Right click on it then click Properties To understand the purpose of file, folder compression – View the size of the file, folder before and after compression 16Lab 03Applied Computing

17 Storage and Compression (Cont.) To compress files, folders – Right click on a file, folder then click Zip or Add to To extract compressed files, folders to a location on a drive – Right click on a file, folder then click Unzip or Extract to 17Lab 03Applied Computing
