Vocabulary Habeas Corpus - is a constitutional protection against unlawful imprisonment. draft - a system of required military services. Income tax - a tax on the money people receive. Levied- to impose by law. Currency - money used to make purchases. Inflation - general rise in prices.

Divisions in the north and south In the south many people were against the war, places that were against slavery tended to have less slaves like Georgia and north Carolina, about half of georgians supported session and there were around 100 peaceful protests against the war in north Carolina also there governors refused to force men into the war. But the southerners were not the only ones against the war the north had its fare share of people who agreed with slavery and blamed many things on Lincoln and his emancipation proclamation. Both sides of the war effort had to deal disruptions from there own people the most common one was people convincing soldiers to desert and go home.

Divisions continued Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis suspended the right of habeas corpus in some places during the war. Many left the war effort because of the emancipation proclamation

THe Draft laws Desertion was a problem on both sides with between 300,000 and 550,000 union and confederate soldiers Deserted their units about half returned after planting crops, to meet their troop needs each side set up a draft the south with a smaller population was the first to act in April of 1862 the Confederacy passed a law requiring white men from the ages 18 to 35 to go to war but it later expanded to 17 to 50 the north however had a slightly bigger in the start but once the South increased theirs it was smaller with men from the ages of 20 to 45 the whole war.

The war and economic strains Northern industries boomed as they turned out goods the Union needed in the war. To pay the costs of fighting the war congress levied the first income tax in american history in august of 1861. The union also printed 400 million dollars of paper money Southern food shortages were a result of invading union soldiers. In 1863 more than 1,000 women looted shops in richmond other riots were a result of food shortages.

Women in the civil war In both the north and south women contributed to the war with 400 disguised women helping out by joining the north or south others becoming spies but the most common thing for women to do was take over businesses, farms, and plantations women on both sides also did factory work others did dangerous jobs like making ammunition, some took over federal jobs.
