Draw a line under the last prompt and add this to the same page. Writing Prompt & Expectations Write an informative essay about the obstacles Satchel Paige faced on his way to the Major Leagues. Students will use directly cited and paraphrased evidence from the text. Students will use the PEEL strategy to formulate body paragraphs. Students will incorporate the following academic vocabulary words into their writing: convey, according to, essentially, evidently, due to, maintain, reveal, demonstrate, concur.

What were the major obstacles Satchel Paige faced? Poverty as a child Run in with the law Being barred from the Major leagues How did Satchel Paige overcome these obstacles? Take notes on the sources as you read. Highlight important information and evidence.

Body Paragraphs! Every topic sentence should start with a transitional word, restate the thesis and the point. Use evidence from the Biography and properly cite. Thoroughly explain your evidence by tying it back to the point. How is this an obstacle? How was it overcome? Link to conclude and transition to the next paragraph.

Thursday Ringer (EVEN) Read the passage. Answer the question on your whiteboard and turn over. If we went round the moon it would not make a pennyworth of difference to me or to my work.” According to Sherlock Holmes (the narrator), how does the skillful workman differ from the fool (1.3 characters)? The workman builds an attic with elastic walls. The workman acquires as much lumber as possible. The workman has both useful and useless knowledge. The workman prevents his brain from becoming too crowded.

Introduction! Hook, introducing sentences, thesis statement! Start with a quote or an interesting fact from the biography Introduce who you will be discussing and why he is a notable baseball Hall of Famer. Thesis Statement: On his way to the Major Leagues , the obstacles that Satchel Paige faced was poverty as a child, a run in with the law, and the fact that he was barred from the Major Leagues because of the color of his skin. (15-20 min.)

Draw a picture for each example. Create your own example/picture and add it to the table in your journal.

Reason 1: Poverty as a child (15-20 min.) First, introduce why his family was in poverty Why would Paige’s mother change the spelling of their last name? What did Satchel Paige do to help his family? What did this eventually lead him to?

Finish Reason 2: Run in with the law (15-20 min.) Why was Paige in trouble? Where did he go? How did this trip to reform school end up being a good thing? Who did he meet? What did he learn to do?

Reason 3: Barred from the Major Leagues because of the color of his skin (15-20 min.) Did Paige just give up because he was barred? How did he make a name for himself? How did Paige become famous? When and how did his dream finally come true? When did he become a Rookie in the Major Leagues?

Conclusion! (15-20 min.) Transition to restated thesis: Therefore, the poverty Satchel Paige faced as a child, his run in with the law, and the fact that he was barred from the Major Leagues because of the color of his skin never stopped him from making his dream of being a professional baseball player. Reread your body paragraphs and restate important details from each paragraph. Leave the reader with something to think about!

Color Code – 15 min. Introduce-topic sentence with thesis. RED Evidence-must have 2 pieces for each body paragraph. HIGHLIGHT Explain/Elaborate-tie back to your baby thesis. Explain how the evidence supports the thesis of your body paragraph. BLUE Identify the hook, thesis statement, and 3 baby thesis statements in the introduction. Remember your conclusion should tie back to your thesis statement in your introduction.

(10 min.) Grade – 60 min. Using the FSA rubric, self grade your paper. As you read your paper, make any necessary corrections and revisions. Identify a strength and target. Give yourself a final rating. (10 min.) Pass your paper to your teammates and have each teammate grade your paper using a different colored pencil or pen. Each teammate must identify a strength and target. (10 min. per paper) Write your final essay making corrections needed.
