16 Introduction! Hook, introducing sentences, thesis statement!
Start with a quote or an interesting fact from the biography Introduce who you will be discussing and why he is a notable baseball Hall of Famer. Thesis Statement: On his way to the Major Leagues , the obstacles that Satchel Paige faced was poverty as a child, a run in with the law, and the fact that he was barred from the Major Leagues because of the color of his skin. (15-20 min.) Give 20 minutes. Create chicken foot first. Share ideas.

17 Introduction Satchel Paige was the first African American inducted into the baseball hall of fame. Satchel Paige started playing baseball in reformatory school. He later played for Negro leagues because African American players weren’t allowed to play in the major leagues. Paige eventually was signed to play with the Cleveland Indians. His hard work and fast pitch helped make him famous. On his way to the Major Leagues, the obstacles that Satchel Paige faced was poverty as a child, a run in with the law, and the fact that he was barred from the Major Leagues because of the color of his skin.

18 Reason 1: Poverty as a child (15-20 min.)
First, introduce why his family was in poverty Why would Paige’s mother change the spelling of their last name? What did Satchel Paige do to help his family? What did this eventually lead him to? Give 20 minutes. Share ideas.

19 Reason 1-Body paragraph 1
To begin with, Paige dealt with poverty as a child. He was born into a large family. For example, he was the 7th of 12 children. At the age of 12 the determined Satchel Paige started carrying luggage for money at the railroad station. While working Paige was given the nickname Satchel because he looked like a Satchel tree (source 1). The name stuck throughout this career. This eventually led him to a run in with the law sending him to reform school.

21 Reason 2: Run in with the law (15-20 min.)
Why was Paige in trouble? Where did he go? How did this trip to reform school end up being a good thing? Who did he meet? What did he learn to do? Give 20 minutes.

22 Reason 2-Body paragraph 2
Another problem Paige faced was a run in with the law. Paige stole rings and was sent to a reform school (source 1). His trip to reform school ended up being a positive experience because he started playing baseball and met his coach. He gave up 5 years of freedom to become a talented fast pitched baseball player. The coach taught him his unique pitch that later made him famous in the major leagues (source 1). Although, Paige eventually made it into the major leagues it was not an easy road due to the discrimination African American baseball players faced.

23 Reason 3: Barred from the Major Leagues because of the color of his skin (15-20 min.)
Did Paige just give up because he was barred? How did he make a name for himself? How did Paige become famous? When and how did his dream finally come true? When did he become a Rookie in the Major Leagues?

24 Reason 3- Body paragraph 3
Furthermore, another problem Satchel Paige faced was being barred from the major leagues. Though he was barred from the major leagues because of the color of his skin Paige never gave up. African Americans were not allowed to play with white baseball players in the minor or major leagues (source 5). This did not stop Satchel from playing baseball. The determined Satchel Paige kept working on his fast pitch while playing with the Negro leagues that eventually got him signed into the Cleveland Indians in 1948 (source 5). Satchel Paige kept working hard and eventually was recognized as the first African American to be inducted into the baseball hall of fame. Type a model example as they share.

25 Conclusion! (15-20 min.) Transition to restated thesis: Therefore, the poverty Satchel Paige faced as a child, his run in with the law, and the fact that he was barred from the Major Leagues because of the color of his skin never stopped him from making his dream of being a professional baseball player. Reread your body paragraphs and restate important details from each paragraph. Leave the reader with something to think about!

26 Conclusion In conclusion, the obstacles Satchel Paige faced in his life included poverty, a run in with the law, and segregation in the minor and major leagues. Satchel Paige was far more determined than the average baseball player. He did not stop as a fast pitcher, he later became a coach for the Atlanta Braves. Type model example as they share.
