1 Monday Bell Ringer (ODD)
This week you will work on writing a narrative story by following the plot diagram elements. Today, you will begin your story and you must write the beginning of your story. Be sure to include the characters, setting, and rising action (events leading up to the conflict). If You finish early, read a book. If you did not finish your plot diagram from last week, please work on finishing it after your writing. 1. Have a pencil ready for the day. 2. Get a piece of loose leaf paper for the bell ringer.

Today you will take notes on the biography side: -How does the biographer portray Powell? Write words to describe him. -What does the biographer want us to understand about Powell? (biographer is the author) 2. Write the vocabulary and definitions from today’s text on the back of your notes. 3. Answer the questions at your team on a piece of loose leaf paper. Turn in with your name. If you finish early, study your notes and vocabulary or read a book. Test tomorrow!

19 Memoir vs. Biography Test – 45 minutes
1. Open book and notes. You may not use the book or notes for the vocabulary questions. 2. Your written response must restate the question, state the answer, and support the answer using 2 details from the text. See below for how I will grade it. Restating the question – 1 pt. Answer – 1 pt. 2 Details from the text– 2 pts. Conventions (spelling, punctuation, & capitals) – 1 pt. 3. When you are finished you may revise your test from last week. 4. Write an autobiography of your life on loose leaf paper. Follow the directions. Read a book if all of the above is done.

Finish writing your story. If you are finished, find someone who is finished and quietly trade stories. Check each other’s paper for each of the elements below. Make any revisions to your story that are needed. You should have the following: -Characters -Setting -Rising action (events that lead to the conflict) -Climax -Main conflict -Falling action (events that lead to the solution) -Resolution 1. Have a pencil ready for the day. 2. Finish writing your story.

Computer Games Drive Social Ties (nobody in 5th/6th period) Can playing video games help strengthen social relationships? Connect: Describe a time when you played a video game with a friend. How did it help strengthen your relationship? The Violent Side of Video Games Is it dangerous for individuals and society when children play violent video games? Connect: Describe a time when a parent or teacher told you, or someone you know, that you were wasting too much of your time playing video or computer games. What was the response? What Video Games Can Teach Us Do the potential benefits of video games outweigh the disadvantages? Connect: Describe a time when you, or someone you know, learned something from a game that was useful outside of the game itself in some way. If you have never had this experience with video games, describe a time when you were motivated to learn something by a game, anything from how to throw a ball, to how to play cards, and so on.

Main conflict- Hint: Think about the problem the main character is having at the beginning of the story. Setting- Suspense- What sentences create suspense in the story? Resolution- Hint: Think about how the deer encounter affects him. Theme- Cite evidence from paragraph 5 to support the theme by underlining the sentence. When you focus on another task you can become distracted from your problems.

2. Written response- Restate the question and answer the question using details from the story. The sentence shows that John is beginning to overcome his problem. It says, “ he hasn’t thought about his grandfather.” He hasn’t fully solved his problem, because he’s not sure “if that was good or if that was bad.”

1. Answer the questions. 2. Written response- State the theme, restate the question, and answer the question using details from the story. Fill in the blanks… The theme is _____. Paragraphs 8-12 contributes to the development of the theme by _____. The theme is to never give up. Paragraphs 8 through 12 contribute to the development of the story’s theme by describing how Brian realizes the hatchet is the key to his survival because throwing it against the stone wall creates sparks that lead to a fire. It doesn’t work the first few times, but he doesn’t give up. After many tries Brian succeeds and realizes, “I will have fire here.” Read a book when finished and you will add to your plot diagram tomorrow. When everyone is done we will review the answers using numbered heads together.
