Rickets By: Jennifer Eury September 16, 2014 5th Block

History of Rickets Rickets was founded as early as the second century and in 1640s in England. They found the cause of rickets in the 1920s and recommended in the 1930s that its important to drink milk and to have a cod-liver supplement for children to take for the Vitamin-D that they need. It is most common in under-developed nations.

The Cause of Rickets Rickets is caused by a deficiency of Vitamin-D. There are 3 different types of rickets; Nutritional Rickets, Hypophosphatemic Rickets and Renal Rickets.

3 Different Types of Rickets Nutritional Rickets are caused by a Vitamin-D deficiency. Mostly common in dark-skinned infants or children who are kept out of direct sun-light. Hypopohosphatic Rickets are caused by low levels of phosphate. The bones become very soft and pliable. Renal Rickets are caused by a number of kidney disorders. The people who have this are usually have a hard time regulating the amount of electrolytes in there system.

Symptoms of Rickets Bone Pain or Tenderness Dental deformities Delayed formation of teeth Decreased muscle growth Impaired Growth, short stature Number of skeletal deformities such as abnormally shaped skull, bowlegs, ribcage abnormalities and breastbone, pelvic and spinal deformities.

How to Treat Rickets Vitamin-D supplements are always recommended also to get plenty of sunshine. But depending on the severity of the abnormalities a referral to an orthopedic provider for evaluation is recommended.
