Henry Pettit – NLA Media Access Rates used in tables are those effective from April 2013

Brief History 1996 Publisher owned licensing body. Newspapers. Direct distribution of revenue. Transactional licensing – usage based. 2006 Database (eClips)– control of content and service delivery to media monitoring agencies. Digital delivery of clips to end users. 2010-2012 Licensing of web content and extension of eClips to include online content. 2013/14 Addition of magazines to licensing portfolio.

rights licensing & database business NLA in 2017 Publisher owned rights licensing & database business Revenue £42m Royalties £36m 1,350 newspaper titles 2,400 Web titles 1,650 magazine titles NLA media access has grown from a £20m to £27m business in eight years. This is a result of strong sales growth and performance by you the sales teams. The majority of the you have been with the company for more than five years and have accumulated a wealth of licensing knowledge and experience. We are committed to retaining you and growing the business. The NLA has consistently provided attractive remuneration and benefits in recognition of the effort you put in and the results you deliver. It’s been a bigger challenge for us to marry remuneration with career development and progression. As a small company progression opportunities can be limited. Earlier in the summer however (and with recruitment, growth, staff retention and development firmly lodged in our minds), we embraced the challenge (led by Kim and Maria) of coming up with workable ideas to combine rewards, remuneration, career progression and development in one framework/structure. As you can see from the figures on this slide, we will have a total of 19.5 staff in sales in 2014 with four new additions to the teams (Daisy, Ian and Harriet starting this month and another in NB in 2014) generating revenue in the order of £24m. The addition of new staff, together with recognition, development and earning opportunities for all, was impetus enough for us to come up with some ideas on sales progression and career development for you to consider. Today is about sharing our thinking thus far, and seeking your guidance, thoughts and input.

www.nlamediaaccess.com Why is the NLA important? We support the newspaper and journalism industry which faces threats in the internet age. Fees collected are directly tied to the volumes that are copied, commercially by companies, returning a fair reward back to the publisher. Royalties paid are equivalent to 1500 new jobs in journalism. Helped create and raise money for the Journalism Diversity Fund - £1million paid already. And of course keeps companies copyright compliant…! www.nlamediaaccess.com
