2. Guidance – Apprenticeships
Apprenticeship is a programme of structured education and training which formally combines and alternates learning in the work place with learning in an education or training centre.
It is a dual system, a blended combination of on-the-job employer-based training and off-the-job training which:
 prepares the participant for a specific occupation, and
 leads to a qualification nationally recognised on the National Framework of Qualifications from Level 5-Level 10.

Apprentices are employed by an approved employer for the duration of the programme which is generally between 2-4 years. Apprenticeship programmes provide at least 50% workplace based learning.
A 2014 Review of Apprenticeship Training in Ireland recommended expansion of the national apprenticeship system into new and existing industry sectors. This builds on a strong tradition; since the 1970s it is estimated that over 105,000 apprentices have been trained in Ireland.
Over the past 18 months work has been underway to introduce new apprenticeships to add to existing ‘craft’ apprenticeships. 
In 2016, there were over 3,700 new registrations on craft apprenticeships in sectors that include Engineering, Motor, Electrical and Construction. Craft apprenticeships are generally four years in duration, lead to an award at Level 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications, and comprise seven alternating phases of on-the-job and off-the-job training.

Apprenticeships introduced from 2016 on lead to an award between Levels 5-10 on the National Framework of Qualifications.
Each apprenticeship programme can be between 2-4 years in duration. Diverse models of training on-and-off the job are used, as well as different models of delivery and target groups (including those already in employment).
Apprenticeship development and roll-out is overseen by industry-led groups (consortia) working with education and training providers and other partners.

Apprenticeships: Craft
Apprenticeships
Apprentices work and train at the same time so that they can learn the skills and expertise needed for their chosen craft.
The training takes place both on the job, in the workplace, and also off the job, in a designated education facility.
Training for craft apprenticeships generally takes a minimum of four years. It is divided into seven phases – four in the workplace and three at an education facility.
There are some exceptions.
Training for floor/wall tiling is shorter, with a minimum of three years. These courses have only five phases – three in the workplace and two in an education facility.

Who Runs Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeship is a national programme which is managed and delivered by a number of education partners, Government bodies, the Department of Education and Skills, employers and unions.
SOLAS has statutory responsibility for the designation of apprenticeships as part of the statutory apprenticeship system, which is organised in Ireland by SOLAS, the Department of Education and Skills, the Higher Education Authority, employers and unions.
Employers across each of the trades and occupations are responsible for the employment of an apprentice.
Education Institutes including ETB Training Centres and Institutes of Technology are responsible for the delivery of the training and education elements of an apprenticeship.

Be industry led
Be two years duration as a minimum
Involve learning that alternates between a workplace and an educational or training institute
Be a minimum of 50% on the job training
Be part of formal Education and Training
Be substantial in depth and duration, in order to prepare Apprentices to work autonomously and competently in a specific occupation
Apprentices employed and paid under a Contract of Apprenticeship
Apprentices paid a salary for the duration of the apprenticeship (on-the-job and off-the-job)

The Apprentice Electrician/Network Technician programme offers you on the job learning as well as classroom based learning.  You will benefit from varied work experience, working both indoors and outdoors.  You will learn a variety of electrical and practical skills and you will obtain a QQI Advanced Level 6 Electrical Trade Certificate with a World Class Utility Company.  ESB Networks DAC serves 2.3 million domestic and business customers in Ireland providing a safe and reliable electricity supply. 
Each year, ESB Networks employ a number of Electrical Apprentices.  
Training commences in September 2017. 
Candidates must be over 16 years of age on 1st June 2017. 
Closing date is Thursday, 30th March 2017.
